Coats for Fall 2023
Let’s take a look at 13 trends we spotted most on the designer runways for Fall. If you want our general tips for coasts, be sure to check out our article on how to choose a coat.
Classic trench
A trench coat is always a style staple for transitional weather as winter turns to spring or summer turns to Fall, because it protects you from the elements without adding a lot of extra bulk. Choose a classic beige trench in a maxi length, or a shorter style. Or, add freshness to the trench trend by choosing a bright color or print, as seen at Missoni.

Shearling
If you love a moto jacket’s look but want to add extra warmth, choose a cozy shearling coat. Choose from traditional black or brown with a cream shearling collar, or choose a pop of color, as featured at GCDS. Wear over your jeans and sweater outfits or to keep you cozy in your dress.

Coats for fall 2023 – Long checked
A check print coat is a classic for Fall, so if you do choose to invest in one, you can be sure you’ll be able to wear it for many years to come. Choose a floor-sweeping style for extra drama, or wear a check blazer. Pair with jeans or leather pants.
Zimmermann – Stella McCartney – Etro
Gold
It’s hard to get more glamorous than gold. And there were plenty of gold coats on the Fall 2023 catwalks. You could choose full gold as shown at Dolce & Gabbana. A similar style would look beautiful over your little black dress for party season. Or, wear a gold blazer with a white shirt and jeans or leather pants for dinner. We love the way Dries Van Noten combined gold with terracotta. If you can’t find a coat that does the same, you could still combine the same colors with separates.

Coats for fall 2023 – Long black
As well as your little black dress, you could add a long black coat to your closet. There were long black coats all over the Fall 2023 runways. Opt for any material, from leather to wool, or a satin tuxedo style. Add a scarf in your most flattering color to brighten up your black.

long white
There were also lots of long white coats on the catwalks, which looked super stylish. But, of course, long white may not be practical depending on the weather where you are. If you love a floor-sweeping look, wear it when you’re heading to parties, dinner, or wherever you won’t be outside too long. Or, if you are worried about your coat being splashed as you walk in rainy, muddy or snowy weather, choose a slightly shorter style.
Wear your white coat over black outfits, and add red accessories. Or wear it with other neutrals like terracotta, brown, or beige.

best coats for fall 2023 – Leather & suede
Leather and suede coats are always on trend, but there were definitely more of them than usual on the Fall 2023 runways. White shorter, moto jackets are always in fashion, if you want to be on trend (and warmer) then choose a longer, belted style.
Bottega Veneta – Ferragamo – Balenciaga
a pop of pink
Pink may not be the first shade you consider when choosing a winter coat, but it’s a great option because it is so unexpected. Choose a glamorous pink coat, like the one shown at Valentino, to wear over your evening wear, or add a wool pink coat to your daytime jeans and sweater looks.
Red
Red was the big color trend of the Fall 2023 season, so it’s no surprise that lots of designers chose to feature red coats. Red coats in absolutely any material and any length are on trend. So choose a long, maxi style, or a red blazer. Or, combine the red color trend with one of the other coat trends and look out for a red trench, red leather or red shearling style.
Stella McCartney – Valentino – Stella McCartney
Capes and ponchos
Not just for superheroes, capes can look incredibly glamorous. To be on trend this season, choose a longer cape. You can add leather gloves if you think you’ll be chilly. A long cape is the perfect cover-up for your party and evening outfits this season.
Dundas – Saint Laurent – Dundas
Floral coats
Plenty of florals were on the Fall 2023 catwalks, from dresses to blouses. And many designers also chose to feature florals on their coats. Choose a floral print that is as subtle or bold as you want. They’re all on-trend. A floral coat will add interest to even the plainest of outfits.
Dries Van Noten – Chanel – Dries Van Noten
Fluffy & fringe
Faux fur is always a winter and Fall trend, but designers chose a slightly different take on the look this Fall by adding fringing rather than fur. Wear a fringe coat over everything from your favorite evening dress to your white shirt and jeans. If you opt for a coat with a lot of drama, keep the rest of your look relatively simple.
Valentino – Dries Van Noten – Gucci
