Asymmetric skirts

The hemline of the season is both high and low, and we also spotted lots of asymmetrical skirts on the 2025 catwalks. We’re a big fan of asymmetry here at 40+ style, so we’re thrilled that it is being embraced this season. An asymmetrical hemline is flattering because it creates a slimming effect. Plus, it adds interest and a bit of an edge to your outfit. You can wear your skirts with knee boots and then switch to sandals when the weather warms up.

Earthy palettes

You would usually expect earthy shades—like mustard, browns, terracotta, or olive—to be the preserve of Fall. So, it was somewhat of a surprise to see so many of these shades on the spring catwalks. Freshen up these muted shades by wearing metallics or brights. For instance, brown goes wonderfully with gold or red.

Pink

If there is one color of the season, then it’s pink. This spring’s pink is more muted and soft than the bright fuchsia we’ve seen in previous seasons. And the great thing is you can start wearing pink no matter the weather. You could opt for a pink wool coat if it’s still cool where you are, or update your jeans with a pink blazer. Opt for pink dresses as the weather warms up, or choose a pink skirt and wear it with a T-shirt or sweater.

Even if you don’t have a yacht, you can still channel maritime style. It’s an easy style to emulate. You may even have clothes in your wardrobe that you can wear to get this look. Just opt for anything navy and white and combine the two colors, and look out for stripes. Choose horizontal stripes to add width and vertical stripes to elongate—a great way to balance out your figure.

Burgundy

Burgundy was the color of Fall 2024. If you invested in this shade, the good news is that it’s still very much on trend for spring 2025. Opt for a burgundy leather jacket, which you can wear over all your spring and summer dresses, or a burgundy silk shirt that would look wonderful with your favorite jeans.

Tulle and sheer fabrics

Sheer fabrics are on trend, and they can either be tricky to wear or be your fashion friend. What’s good about sheer clothing and tulle is that you can use them as a light layer that can add interest and cover up any parts of your body you aren’t super confident about without adding too much extra warmth. For instance, you could wear a shorter skirt with a tulle overlay or wear a sheer duster as an outer layer.

Inflated shapes and balloon hems

This trend won’t be for everyone, but don’t discount it immediately. Adding volume to one part of your body can help to create balance. For instance, maybe you’re a pear shape, so you want to add a bit of volume to your top half to balance out wider hips. Or, your figure may be balanced the other way – if you’re an inverted triangle, you could add a voluminous skirt to balance out broader shoulders. Think about how you can make the trend work for you.

Classic trench coats

Soft suiting

Structured yet soft at the same time, spring suits are perfect to wear for spring and summer events. Wear the whole suit when you have weddings or a special dinner to attend, and then you can wear it separately by teaming the blazer with your jeans or the pants with a T-shirt and loafers.
