Classic deep burgundy

Burgundy is one of fall’s quintessential colors, and for good reason. This rich, deep shade of red exudes luxury, making it perfect for both day wear, or instead of your little black dress. You can wear burgundy for anything from a knit sweater to a tailored wool coat or a leather handbag. Burgundy tends to be flattering on most skin tones and looks very sophisticated. We would pair with neutrals like taupe or pale gray, or opt for a bold look with contrasting shades like mustard or pale blue (which are also among our list below).

Powerful red

The color of passion, power, and energy is never not in trend, and you can make a strong statement in red this season. From fiery scarlet to poppy to deeper wine tones verging on burgundy (above), red is so versatile. A red coat can make a statement, or you can add a pop of color to neutral outfits. With red, you have the opportunity to stand out, while still embracing a classic color.

Any shade of green

Just as every shade of orange was on the catwalks, all shades of green are also very much on trend. Everything from olive to emerald green. Darker shades are perfect to act as a neutral, and you’ll find khaki among our list of neutrals further below. Brighter tones can add an unexpected twist to your fall wardrobe.

Mustards and yellows

Mustard tones are classic for autumn, and khaki and burgundy are synonymous with the season. Mustard works well for outerwear and knitwear. Pair it with gray for a modern look. In addition to mustard, we also spotted a lot of pale yellows on the catwalks, perfect for bringing a little sunshine to cooler days.

Pale blue

Pale blue may not be the first color you think of for fall, but it’s a refreshing addition to the season’s palette. You might already have a pale blue blouse or sweater in your closet, but you could also add a pale blue shirtdress to your closet, or a pair of pale blue boots. Pale blue works wonderfully with neutrals like gray, taupe and khaki, but it can also go wonderfully with deeper shades like forest green or burgundy.

Pretty in pink

From pale blue to another unexpected shade for fall –pink. Whether pale or a deeper pink, all pinks are very on trend for fall. Add a pink coat to your closet to instantly update darker neutrals like black. Pink also goes well with gray, or you could create more unexpected combinations like pink with burgundy or brown.

Neutrals to wear with your colors

You can opt for a top-to-two color scheme, but you’ll likely want to pair your colors with neutrals. Below, you’ll find the on-trend neutrals for the season.

Khaki

While khaki is obviously green, it works well as a neutral. Try a khaki coat or combat pants. Pair your khaki with brighter shades like orange or wear it with other neutrals like taupe.

Modern grays

Another neutral, perfect for fall, is gray, which offers a softer alternative to black. Choose a gray wool coat, a cashmere sweater, or tailored trousers. Gray can provide a sophisticated backdrop for bolder colors like red or mustard.

Eternal black

Finally, black remains an eternal classic that never goes out of style. It is the ultimate in versatility, providing a sleek silhouette that works for any occasion. You can wear black in any number of ways with any other color. If you’re worried about black making you look drained, then wear it away from your face and keep brighter shades at the top of your outfit.

Key color combinations

Of course, colors aren’t just about wearing one shade. You will want to come up with new ways to combine your colors. One of the big trends we spotted from many designers on the catwalks was the pairing of green and pink. Green and pink go beautifully together, as you can see from the outfits below.

Fall offers a rich and diverse color palette, giving you so many options to try new colors and combinations.
