Time for another dressing challenge. In the roundup of the last dressing challenging involving scarves, I asked you all for your ideas and quite a few of you wanted to do black and white. Although that is fun it’s also a litte bit too easy (in my opinion) so I think the challenge should be to add at least one colour.
Adding colour is good for another reason too, as I believe that most women over 40 look better when there is a bit of colour added to your outfits, especially closely to your face.
Adding an extra colour to a black and white outfit is not difficult at all, since you could just add a colourful belt, shoes, a scarf or even a necklace to accomplish that. Of course you don’t have to limit yourself to one, add as many as you wish! For those of you that don’t like to wear black at all, you could use that in an accessory or shoe.
Create 2 different outfits that incorporate black, white and at least 1 extra colour and submit to me (guidelines below). I will display my favorites in the next dressing challenge results.
To inspire you I checked some of the examples currently available in affordable stores such as Zara, Mango and Asos.
Zara
Take the colourful Zara outfits at the top, for example. Adding an extra bright colour to the outfit, instantly turns the chic black and white into a hip graphical and current outfit. Don’t immediately think that these clothes are too ‘young’ for you.
For example, although the lovely striped dress could be worn as a dress on its own, I would also wear it as a tunic over skinnies and then add a colourful cardigan. You could do the same with the lovely black and blue dress (although I would not wear that on its own). All these outfits could easily be mixed and matched together, so it’s like a mini wardrobe capsule. I’m sure you have items in you closet that could easily be added to this as well.
Asos

A few more examples from Asos of lovely black, white and colour combinations. This time, combined with full skirts which are making a comeback this season.
Mango

However, you don’t have to limit yourself to bright colours. You can also add a softer colour to your black and white outfit like mint green, brown or dark blue as seen at Mango.
For more inspiration you can have a look at some of my own black, white and colour outfits here, here, here and here.
It’s really up to you. Create something different that is current and modern and that makes you feel fabulous!

oh goodie… this is a real easy challenge for me. I am the queen of black and white with a colour haha. I will try harder and see whether I can incorporate two colours with the black and white, but I won’t promise that.
And I am so thrilled that full skirts are making their come-back. They suit me so well. I am not so sure whether the length is all that flattering. Usually with lengths like you are showing I try to wear (summer) boots. But perhaps that is just something in my head.
I expect great things from you Greetje!
Oh please don’t. I get an acute fear of failure.
I was so looking forward to participating in one of your challenges…but you know, I just don’t have very much black. A couple of formal pieces, and that’s it. I will see if I can get creative with them. Sylvia, as you know, I do DYT, and though I didn’t have much black in my wardrobe at the time of taking the course, I was so uplifted to let it go. Now, I am seeing a lot of black and white in the stores, and know I could pull off a great look that incorporates a little black with lots of colour. Hmmm, maybe I can come up with something before mid March.

Why don’t you make your formal pieces more informal? So you can wear them more often in daily life. That’s a challenge in itself. Or use the black in a subtle way. You can use as many colours as you like. A black and white belt would be enough. Would love to see you join us!
My contributions will be strictly winter wear, if that’s OK. You will have to amputate my boots at the moment!
Winter wear is perfect! I’m sure many readers would love to see more winter wear on this site!
Hello Sylvia, I cannot find the email to send the photo.
You can send it to sylvia [at] 40plusstyle.com. Of course change at by @… Thanks!
