Festive and shiny, many of us are drawn to sequins for flashy night looks. But how can you wear sequins in a chic way for day time as well?
With New Year’s Eve right around the corner (this year has gone by so fast!), we will show you some great looks to ring in 2016. In addition we will show you some day looks that prove that sequins can be bold AND beautiful without overwhelming your entire look.
New Year’s Eve: Trousers
Even when paired with bold pieces, sequins can seamlessly add a chic look without taking over. In this case, we went for a sequin belt on a red sleeveless jumpsuit. To add a little NYE intrigue we added on animal print pumps and a fur cape for warmth. These Alice + Olivia wide leg lace pants prove that an embellished pant does not have to be a quick fashion don’t. We brought the bling with a heavily sequined scarf that coordinates well with the rest oft he ensemble and plays second fiddle to spotlight seeking wedges (colorful and comfortable).
New Year’s Eve: Skirts
We chose skirts that come with a little stretch around the waist to keep you festive way past midnight. Stella Jean’s print skirt is embellished with blue and red sequins that add enough sparkle to be playful and chic. We took a note from this quirky embellishment and added a playful clutch and medal-like brooch to the look. If you’re looking for something more subdued, we have you covered with a matte sequin tank. Matte sequin is a perfect go-to when you want some sparkle without all of the shine. We kept it together with a Diane von Furstenberg tailored cropped blazer and a white and black graphic pencil skirt.
New Year’s Eve: Dresses
Sequin dresses are almost a required uniform for many NYE parties around the world. In this case, we went two different directions. The first dress is a Ralph Lauren gold sequin dress that screams bling. We played true to its glamorous nature by going all out and pairing it with a luxe fur cape and feather embellished heels. On any other occasion it could be over the top, but the festivities of NYE are that time of year when it’s encouraged to go all out. We toned it down with a dark sequin dress, and brought out the sparkle with rose and gold tone shoes and statement necklace. The dress’ silhouette and low back adds enough drama to stand out.
Bonus Look: To the Office
Work does not have to be the former Studio 54 for you to stylishly and appropriately wear sequins. Here is an office look perfectly suited (pun not intended) for the occasion. However, there are multiple ways to way sequins throughout the day without looking like a walking and talking (though stylish) disco ball.
For this look we went for J. Crew’s absolutely charming coordinating J. Crew blazer and cropped trousers. Embedded with subtle sequins, both pieces offer a slight sheen to the menswear look. To add on to the look and create a contrast, we also added a structured briefcase with rounder edges to soften up the severity of the bag. To add a feminine contrast to the menswear inspired look, we added an office appropriate navy lace top and a trompe l’oeil like melting flower brooch to add a touch of creativity.
Bonus Look: Sequins for Day
We went with two very different looks for day. The first is a cheeky nod to 50s dress and coat two pieces. We brought it to date with an Adrianna Papell sequined dress and silver on trend oxfords. We also went Parisian chic by taking a sequined update on the staple striped top and throwing on a red sleeveless coat. We added very winter appropriate wedge boots, which are comfortable, functional, and stylish. Victoria Beckham’s slim fit jeans feature a slightly distressed knee which toughens the look, without launching into the junior’s department of your favorite department store.
