Even if you aren’t planning to add anything else to your closet, a new pair of shoes can give an old outfit some bang-on-trend flair, particularly as Fall 2018 is all about the statement shoe!
Here are the best shoe trends for women over 40, as seen on the runways for Fall 2018.
Lots of these trends are already in stores. If you really want to update your style, you could look out for footwear which incorporates two or three trends in one, such as white kitten-heeled boots, for example, or pumps which are adorned with jewels and which also have an unusual heel shape.
1. Plaid boots
Designers fell in love with checks for Fall 2018, using them on everything from coats to pants, dresses to skirts. And, they didn’t stop there.
One of the major footwear trends for the next season was the plaid boot. While plaid has traditionally been the preserve of Burberry, everyone from Fendi to Balenciaga opted for checks, houndstooth and tartan for fall. Choosing boots or shoes with checks will give even the simplest of outfits an instant update!
2. Burgundy boots
Another micro-trend for the upcoming season was the burgundy boot. If you’re looking for a change from the usual black or tan, then burgundy is a great option. Autumnal in feel, burgundy is dark enough to act as a neutral, going with a whole range of different colors.
You could team with anything from navy to red, crisp white to olive green. There aren’t many colors that burgundy doesn’t go with! While boots of every color were seen on the Fall 2018 runways, burgundy was the hue of choice for the likes of Mulberry, Marc Jacobs and Giambattista Valli.
3. White boots
White boots were a huge trend for Spring/Summer 2018, so if you’ve already invested in a pair, you’re in luck, as they are still bang on trend for fall. So, you can wear them all year round.
Although, white boots may be harder to keep clean during winter than during summer! Lots of designers went for monochrome looks for fall, so you could try teaming your white boots with black.
4. Architectural heels
Shoes have become wearable works of art for fall 2018. While some designers opted to deliberately slant their heels, others went for a cylindrical effect while some created shoes which looked like sculptures.
There were geometrical shapes, chain link effects and heels which looked as if they were made entirely from crystal. Not only is Fall 2018 the season of the statement shoe, it is also the time of the statement heel!
5. Jewel encrusted
What better way to make a statement with your footwear than by opting for a pair of shoes or boots which are adorned with jewels. Of course, the kings of all things bling, Dolce and Gabbana showcased stunning more-is-more shoes, but the trend was also seen at Erdem, Christopher Kane, Gucci, Alberta Ferretti and Miu Miu.
Just as many designers opted for a heritage look through the use of checks, they also chose to step back in time with some Victoriana-style lace-up boots and shoes. Haider Ackermann updated the look through the use of bright colors, while Chloe toughened up the style with combat-style heels.
7. Stylish silver
Metallic shoes have been a style staple for the past few seasons, whether you opt for silver sandals for summer or a pair of silver heels for festive parties.
This fall and winter, designers toughened up the hue with cage-style booties as well as creating futuristic and jeweled silver boots which would be hero pieces in any outfit.
8. Primary colors
While fall can often be a time of muted olives, burgundy, bronze and taupe – and there were plenty of those hues of the runways – it is also, this year, a time of bright blues, reds, yellows and greens when it comes to footwear. Balenciaga went for 80s style blue pumps, while Lanvin managed to combine three trends in one – 80s, reptile skin and a sculptural heel. Meanwhile Trussardi created can’t-miss-em yellow booties. Just don’t wear them in the rain!
9. Reptile skin
Many designers chose to go for animal prints including leopard, tiger and zebra for their clothing creations.
But, for footwear, reptile skin was definitely the creature of choice when it came to inspiration for boots and shoes, with lots of snakeskin-style on display in all sorts of muted, bright and pastel shades.
10. Sexy kitten heels
For those of you who prefer not to wear skyscrapper heels anymore, the designers have obviously been taking note! Kitten heels made a major come back for spring and summer this year, and they are showing no signs of going anywhere this fall. This time round, they have had an update, featuring other trends including jewels, bright hues and Victoriana detailing.
11. Pink shoes
Another micro trend on the catwalk, pink shoes were totally unexpected for the colder months, and that’s why they made such an impact! Marni combined reptile skin along with pink, while there were also some bright, caged boots on show.
Just like white boots, I have a feeling the shocking pink shoe trend is set to stick around through to next summer. While bright pink can be a tricky look to pull off for women over 40, pink shoes can be an easy way to add an up-to-the-minute trend. These would look also great teamed with white for warmer months!
Flowers may be traditionally associated with spring and summer, but designers gave them a winter update by using darker backgrounds on dresses along with floral prints. Plus, there were plenty of florals on shoes and boots too. If you don’t want to go for plaid, then another great option for a statement boot could be flowers!
Which is your favorite shoe trend? If you could choose one trend to buy this fall, which one would it be?
