If you’ve been following 40+ Style for a while, you’ll know we’re a big fan of creating a capsule wardrobe. Putting together a capsule, especially for each new season, is a great way to make sure you have clothes, shoes and accessories that can easily be mixed and matched with each other to solve your “I don’t have anything to wear today” conundrum.
We’ve been inspired by all the new Fall trends and colors.
Psyche @economyofstyle above is also in an Autumnal mood. Checks and plaid are a great print for Fall. She also adds lovely Autumnal florals with the print on her bag.
Karen @styledbykaren above shows how you can continue to wear your favorite summer dresses for Fall. Just add tights and booties and you’re good to go. You could always add a blazer, cardigan or moto jacket if you need extra warmth.
2023 fall capsule wardrobe
Let’s move on to our Fall capsule. Below, you’ll find four tops, sweaters, jackets, pants, dresses, and shoe options to create countless choices. Plus, of course, accessories to finish off your outfits.
When it comes to your tops, a silk shirt is the perfect choice to dress up or down. Also, look out for t-shirts with longer sleeves, graphic prints, and vest tops for layering. When creating your capsule wardrobe, opt for different colors and patterns to give your looks lots of variety.

If the weather is cooling down where you are, you’ll need to add some knitwear. Choose sweaters and cardigans with a variety of neck styles so you have different choices. Look for luxurious fabrics like cashmere, and be inspired by lovely Fall colors. Keep in mind your body shape. For example, a v-neck is super flattering for most figures, while higher necks look good if you have a long neck and an athletic figure. Wider necklines like boatnecks are great for balancing out wider hips if you’re a pear shape.
jackets and coats
For transitional seasons like Spring and Fall, you will generally want to choose coats that offer some warmth and protection from the elements without being too bulky. Choose blazers, moto jackets, and trench coats. Rather than a black leather jacket, look out for one in a beautiful Fall shade like burgundy, mustard or terracotta.

Pants and jeans
Do you tend to wear more pants and jeans, rather than skirts when the weather cools down? Fall is a great time to add tactile fabrics like leather and coated denim. Also, look for interesting prints and Autumn shades. You can choose a mixture of longer leg styles and cropped lengths, as you can always add booties if your ankles are getting cold!
Tanasha @letsrecreatethelook above chooses a timeless outfit of black, white and denim that could easily be adapted for any season.
Dresses and skirts
For your Fall dresses, choose styles with longer sleeves. Wrap dresses are always flattering. Shorter lengths can be worn with leggings or pants. Shirt dresses are versatile as you can wear them with or without a belt to create different silhouettes or open as a duster jacket. We also love asymmetric shapes, like the hemline on the COS pinstriped skirt (below).
Shoes and boots
Switch your sandals for sneakers and booties when Summer turns to Fall. Choose a combination of flat and heeled styles to give you plenty of options for casual or dressy days. Shoe boots like the NYDJ block heels (below) that combine the look of boots and sandals are great for transitional weather, and they add a stylish edge to your outfits.
Suzie @suzie.richetti above shows how you can add a bit of an edge to an otherwise classic outfit of a blazer and striped shirt by teaming them with leather pants.
Now onto some accessories to finish off all your outfits. Just switching your accessories can make a big difference to your looks, taking you from one season to the next. We’ve been inspired by classic styles, Fall colors, and the metallics that were seen on the Fall 2023 runways.
