Wearing leather may seem daunting to some: possibly because you feel it looks too young, or because it has an edgy feel. But, there really is a leather skirt outfit for everyone – no matter what your style personality is.
The recent trend for how to wear a leather skirt has actually been very ladylike, with the likes of Charlize Theron, Elizabeth Banks and Meghan Markle all choosing to wear leather pencil skirts with co-ordinating tops in almost exactly the same color.
In fact, the Duchess of Sussex loves the look so much, I’ve seen her put the same outfit together in two different colors – once in shades of forest green and once in burgundy.
Tips for choosing the perfect leather skirt
Before moving onto some specific outfit ideas, let’s take a look at some general tips to help you choose the most flattering leather skirt.
A skirt to suit your body shape
It’s easy to think that leather skirts mean tight and short, but nothing could be further from the truth.
There are now plenty of styles in leather, and pleather, so you should be able to find one to suit, whether you like an a-line, a midi-skirt or a pencil style.

Fit is everything
When it comes to leather, it can be a forgiving material, skimming over any lumps and bumps, but only if you get the right fit. It shouldn’t be too tight otherwise you will feel constricted.

You could wear any of the sweaters you have in your closet already with your leather skirt and you will instantly give your look a bit of an edge.

Opt for knee-length or midi
There are no rules about what you can and can’t wear to dress in a way which is “age appropriate”. I think the only rule should be that you ought to dress in a way which makes you feel great.
My preference is for a knee-length or midi style rather than anything too short.

I have really lost myself as far as putting together an outfit. I used to have no trouble and basically wore anything I felt comfortable in. I used to wear costume broches(?) And ’50’s style clothing mix with up to date clothing when I was younger…and thinner! The Thrift store and my granny and Aunt’s old jewelry were my places to dress from!!! I felt free and fashionable…I felt that was who I was. Now at 50 and 100 lbs bigger, AND apple shaped, I don’t know who I am. I’m really not vain or think clothes make you, but I think they build confidence and when you look good you feel good. I no longer feel good, sometimes I dread shopping whereas I used to shop all day! Not to mention my bestie is beautiful and dresses so well, sometimes I get embarrassed to be seen with here because I don’t feel stylish enough. I need my spark back.
Hi Felicia, it sounds that you’re still too much attached to the past. There’s really no benefit in that. Your body has changed. You’re still the same person but because you think differently about this body than the body you used to have, you think you can no longer look good in your clothes. If you go shopping with that belief about yourself, it’s very hard to find the right clothes.
You need to start believing that you can look good in your clothes (because you absolute CAN) and then go shopping with that mindset. That’s when you’ll want to go shopping and find the right clothes.
Thank you for including me as an example. In hindsight I thought the boots weren’t right with this outfit. Only looked at the photo after I wore it. Had I taken a photo of the outfit in the mirror before wearing it, I would have known.
