I know I said I was going to talk about a new challenge today, but I just saw the video Fabulous Fashionistas created by Sue Bourne and had to share it with you. UK bloggers have been raving about this show for a while (as the show was broadcast in the UK) but until now I had not actually seen it. The ravers were right. This is one marvellous video that will truly inspire you.
Its stars are:
- Daphne Selfe, 85, who is one of the most popular 80+ models.
- Gillian Lynne, 87, who looks like 57, likes mini skirts and is so flexible and energetic that she puts me to shame.
- Jean Woods, 75, who started a new career at 70 working at Gap.
- Sue Kreitzman, 73, who is fascinated by art and always incorporates that into her clothes.
- Jean Barker, Baroness Trumpington, 91, who sits in the house of lords as a conservative peer.
- Bridget Sojourner, 75,who looks stunning in clothes she finds for less than $10 in charity shops.
Here are just some of the fabulous quotes from the ladies.
Sue kreitzman
“Don’t wear beige. It might kill you.”
” I don’t want to be too over the top. (Laughs) I AM over the top! What I mean is I like to keep a certain amount of elegance. Do I succeed? That is a matter of opinion. I want to just miss that point where I actually look like a clown.”
Bridget Sojourner
“Your style as one gets older is more noticable.”
“How I look is to do with my identity and the fun of it. It’s nothing to do with looking younger.”
“I want to inspire people that getting older is not a bad thing.”
Jean Barker, Baroness Trumpington
“How important is it to look after yourself? The moment you start to sort of let everything go is the moment that you are getting old.”
Gillian Lynne
“I don’t give a damn what anybody says about me.”
“I love miniskirts.”
“It’s all about having a purpose. That is why I think retirement is dangerous.”
Daphne Selfe
“I love fashion and I’m always interested in clothes. I used to make all my clothes.”
Jean Woods
“If I like something, I tend to wear it a lot. So it does not bother me if someone says oh she’s got that dress on again. I put it on for me!”
“I’d like to think I’m streetstyle, more than smart. I wouldn’t want someone to come up to me and say oh you look smart.”
Do you want to grow old with energy and style?
It’s clear that all of these women have this in common. They:
- Love life and enjoy it as much as they can.
- Exercize.
- Have a passion.
- Stay active.
- Have a steely determination and an absolute refusal to give in or give up.
- Care about their style and the way they look.
Be sure to buy it today and watch it!
The film is now up for sale here. I hope you buy it and support Sue Bourne’s work. We need to reward film makers like Sue who highlight and celebrate the older woman!

I just turned 50 and was worrying about being old but having seen this – wow, what can I say, these ladies are a true inspiration. More like this please!
Amazing! Two of the portrayed woman I ‘knew’ already and I have featured them on my Totally Wowed blog and on my Pinterest a while ago.
What an uplifting, inspiring documentary and ladies! Thanks fo sharing, Sylvia!
Lovely and inspirational!
Loved it!
Thank you so much.
All I can say is wow! A truly inspiring story, watching this today at 6:30 am and feeling soooo happy that these women are living the moment with such joy and ferver.
Such an interesting insight into these older women’s lives. They all had good comments, including you give ageing an inch and it will take a mile! 😀
Yes you’re right that is a great quote too!

I watched this programme when it appeared in September and thought the women were aspirational! They all shared the same spirit of not giving way to old age. Loved it!
I love this video. It makes my heart warm ♥
I watched this when it was broadcast in the UK and have saved it to watch again. They were all so inspiring in different ways. I loved the fact that Jean got a job in Gap and then moved on to another trendy shop across the road. She also goes running. I was impressed that they are all so active and it does show what exercise can do for you as you get older so I intend to keep going with mine.
I saw this documentary last week for the first time. I will watch it again, I’m sure. Thanks for sharing, Sylvia.
I was especially attracted to the viewpoint that confronting ageism is activism and political. It fits with living my values and I wanted to meet these women immediately. I was also struck with the fact that several of the women were widows. I was inspired and motivated, and what could be better than that.
great video sylvia!!! thank you! each one of them is beautiful and remarkable in a unique way! i also laughed and cried, as greeetje did, and i promised myself once more never to give up 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing this. I laughed and I cried (really did) when I watched the video. So real, so sincere, so open. I love them all. The barones had me in stitches and Jean made me cry. I will exercise more now that I have seen this. What a lovely time ahead we have.

Oh, what a lovely video ! I have not finished watching yet but I am planning on saving it and looking at it from time to time – as an inspiration. There are lessons in this for all ages.
Beautiful and inspiring women. And more interesting than many of the 16 years old supermodels nowadays.
I love Jean’s hair and style.
…and I should probably go back yo the Yoga classes …:-)
Thanks for sharing this movie,
amy
These women are incredible. I do think that after watching this, if you aren’t inspired to get up and do something (something new, something daring, something challenging) you’ve got one foot in the grave. I might have to watch this any time I feel old or depressed.
I’m in the UK and saw this when it went out. Inspirational women – and a great example of how a little exercise makes such a huge difference when you’re older.
Absolutely fabulous women.
This is one of the most inspiring things I’ve seen in a long time! Thanks for sharing this incredible piece. My mother worked as a nurses aid until she was 82 years old. She felt so needed and always said she enjoyed taking care of the old people!

That was an absolutely wonderful show. I need to start exercising because these women run laps around me and I’m only 40. Thanks for sharing.

I really enjoyed this film, and the high spirit of these women! They all inspire me, and help me deal with the downsides of aging. Love Jean’s hair!
