What to think about when choosing your casual fall outfits
While dressing casually can seem easier than dressing for a night out, it can actually be trickier to add impact to a day-to-day outfit. Here’s what you might want to consider when choosing your casual outfits.
Is it comfortable?
You may be able to put up with a little discomfort for a couple of hours while on a night out. But, for everyday dressing, you’ll want to make sure you can walk, move, work, run errands or whatever the day has in store for you, without any discomfort at all.
Can I add a little twist?
Even though you are dressing casually, that doesn’t mean you can’t elevate your outfits. Look out for luxe fabrics, interesting necklines, asymmetrical details and prints to add interest.
Will it wash and wear well?
You will wear your favorite casual items many, many times, so it’s important to think about how well it will wash and retain its shape so you can continue enjoying your favorite casual clothing for years to come.
Is it flattering?
Importantly, your casual wear should be flattering. Look out for shapes that nip in at the waistline, belts and ruching to make sure your casual clothes flatter you just as much as your favorite evening dress.
The best casual fall outfits from the Nordstrom sale
Now that you’re thinking about the casual outfits which will work best for you, let’s look at some of the most stylish items in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale that you can use to create a fall capsule.
When thinking about your casual tops, you’re likely to want at least one t-shirt. You can add interest by looking out for an on-trend print. A classic striped or white shirt will also be a hero piece in your fall closet and you could think about tunics that you can wear with your jeans or pants.
Now that summer is turning to fall, you’ll be thinking not just about style, but also about warmth. When adding sweaters to your closet, you could opt for a very classic crew or v-neck, or you could look at interesting necklines featuring asymmetry or a bardot-style shoulder. A long cardigan is also a good buy and you can use this as a layering piece to create long, lean flattering lines.
Coats and jackets
It goes without saying that you’ll want a lovely, warm coat as the weather cools. For transitional dressing, you could choose a biker or shorter style, and then look at longer wool and padded jackets to keep you warm and stylish as the year goes on.
Casual jeans and pants
When dressing casually, you’ll probably find you wear more jeans and pants than skirts. After many seasons of skinny jeans, you’ll find that any shape goes now, so you may prefer a more flattering bootcut. I highly recommend Paige jeans which have long been a personal favorite. Yes, they’re more pricey but will last a long time so this is the kind of jeans to buy when they’re on sale.
A pair of great, well-fitting, non see-through leggings is always useful to wear with tunics and sweaters, and you could add some on-trend prints and patterns such as plaid or houndstooth to your fall closet.
Dresses and skirts
I’m sure you’ll still want at least a handful of skirts and dresses among your fall wardrobe. If it’s cool, you can always wear with tights or leggings and boots. Shirt dresses make a lovely casual option or you could look for dresses and skirts with ruching if you are looking to hide a belly.
For casual days, you’re unlikely to want to be tottering around on high heels. If you have a pair of sneakers, a pair of short boots and a pair of knee-high boots in your casual closet, you’ll find they go with pretty much every outfit you own.
Even though you’re dressing casually, that doesn’t mean you have to forego your accessories. While you may not want to wear dangly earrings everyday, a pair of studs will add a little extra polish (Kate Middleton, for example, is never seen without her earrings in).
You could also add a wool or lightweight scarf or a fedora hat to add oomph to your look. When thinking about bags, a tote or a crossbody will be good options to go with your casual style. Also, wide belts are particularly on trend this season and allow you to easily change the look of your casual outfits. For example, you could belt a sweater dress to create a different outfit.
