For the second time in a row, I have been nominated as one of 10 finalists for best fashion blogger of Singapore. As part of the competition we have been asked to write about our style icons from the sixties. Of course I felt compelled to write about style icons that still inspire me today like Audrey Hepburn, Jackie kennedy and Marilyn Monroe, but they have all been featured on the site before in some way.
Instead I’m highlighting a woman that is alive and well and still a style icon today: Catherine Deneuve.
She was listed as one of the fifty best-dressed over 50s by the Guardian in March 2013 and came in at number 12, while previously featured style icons like Helen Mirren took the number 1 spot and Tilda Swinton number 9.
“A woman has to be intelligent, have charm, a sense of humor, and be kind. It’s the same qualities I require from a man.”
Catherine Deneuve is a french actress, born 22 October 1943 who became famous for her portrayal of aloof and mysterious beauties in films such as Repulsion (1965) and Belle de jour (1967). Deneuve was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1993 for her performance in Indochine.
She had several relationships and had 2 short-lived marriages which may explain her grim outlook on marriage.
“I don’t see any reason for marriage when there is divorce”.
“Love is suffering. One side always loves more.”
She is also very well known as the muse of famous designer Yves Saint Laurent whom she met at the set of Luis Buñuel’s film, Belle de Jour in 1966. It was the start of a life-long friendship and they had many collaborations together both privately and professionally. The clothes from their first movie collaboration are still iconic today.
“I think the clothes in Belle de Jour are very important to the style of the film. Even today, it is still timeless.”
Today, Catherine Deneuve is still frequently seen at fashion shows of many international designers and at movie premieres. Her most recent film is the musical Les Bien-aimés (2011) co-starring her real-life daughter Chiara Mastroianni.
The 60s remain an intriguing period. Of all the pictures featured I love the clothes from the 60s the best. It must have been such an exciting time to be young.
Still at 69 Catherine Deneuve continues to inspire with her style and grace. I’d love to see her in many more films.
P.S. In order to win the coveted Singapore’s best fashion blogger award, I will need your votes! You will need to register an account with OMY but after that you can vote every day! Thanks!

Wonderful to see her get some press- I am a lifelong fan of this beautiful and talented woman. Thank you for featuring her. And good luck in the contest. I hope you win!
Thanks Bella!
I think it was even more exciting to be 29 in the 60’s. Or is that still young? I was in my teens in the sixties (born in 1954), but a bit too young to acknowledge the exciting things. And no money to spend on nice clothes.
Funny thing is, when you are born in such times, you cannot see how different they are with regard to the past. For you there is no past. Which is why we could not understand our parents. The generation gap was at its widest in those days. Revolutionary times.
Yes, I think you’re right Greetje. That is why we need to live firmly in the present! Great that you could at least experience the 60s a bit. Were you a fan of the Beatles?
Yes definitely the Beatles. My brother (6 years older) thought I was stupid as he was a fan of the Rolling Stones.
First of all Congratulation son the nomination and I’m planning on creating an account and voting for you.
Second, Catherine Deneuve has that an amazing, almost ethereal, angelic type of beauty that no matter her age her beauty shine through.
I’ve seen many of her most recent field at the independent films theater in Ft Lauderdale.
Thanks Ofelia!
I know.. she is one lucky woman….
I have always loved Catherine Deneuve. Thanks for showing so many wonderful pictures of her.
