When it’s cold outside, it’s easy to reach for your favorite pair of jeans every day. But, there’s no need to push your skirts to the back of your wardrobe completely. Skirts can be comfortable and warm in winter too.

Below, you’ll find lots of inspiration on how to style your skirts for winter weather so you can still wear your favorite skirts without freezing.

How to choose skirts for winter

First, is there a difference between a winter skirt and a summer skirt?

Winter skirts are usually made of a thicker material, which makes them more comfortable for winter.

A winter skirt will usually also have some lining if the outer material isn’t that thick.

Below are some of our best tips and outfit inspiration when it comes to choosing the right skirt to wear for winter and what to wear with it.

Invest in a pair of opaque tights to wear with your winter skirt outfits

Opaque tights really are your best friend when it comes to wearing skirts during the winter months. Choose a pair that are at least 80 denier and look out for thermal or fleece-lined tights for extra warmth.

For more inspiration read our article on how to wear tights.

don’t forget your warm accessories

It’s important to take your warmth where you can get it when thinking about the best way to wear winter skirts for women. Add accessories such as a wool hat, a chunky scarf and a pair of leather or suede gloves as the finishing touches to your outfit.

Choose a pair of long boots

A pair of knee-high, or even thigh-high boots, worn over your opaque tights (of course) will help to keep your lower legs warm, making this the perfect combination when thinking about winter outfits with skirts.

Look out for a pair which are insulated or fleece or faux fur lined if you want to make sure you stay cozy. You can even wear a pair of socks over your tights and under your boots to add an extra, unseen, layer.

Choose a warm material

If you run the risk of the bottom half of your outfit being a bit chilly, then make sure you keep your upper body warm. Choose a warm sweater to minimize any coldness from the rest of your outfit. Opt for a winter-ready material such as wool, which has insulating properties to trap in some heat. Make sure your skirt material is also warm so you’re cozy from top to toe.
