I wear foundation on most days. When I go for a medical treatment/procedure I don’t. I’ve worn foundation since I was 16 years old and use a treatment program for my skin since before then! As a lady from the South, I was taught at as early as 12 or 13 years of age to use a skin program. Then taught to use make-up at 16. I really believe this lays a good foundation for a life time of proper skin care and proper make-up application!! I’m 55 and have been wearing IT since my early 50’s!!
When purchasing makeup in a department store try to get a person whose own makeup looks good. I’m 76 and when I see an older sales person with matte makeup on, I know she will not make me look good. Always ask for samples, especially when buying expensive.
I have not used foundation since my thirties, and even then rarely because it made me itch and turned my skin red. I don’t put anything on my face but lotion or sunscreen with the fewest chemical ingredients as possible because my skin is so sensitive. Not bathing my face in chemicals has paid off, I’m 60 and look like 35…
Now in mid 40s, for my combination-oily skin I use NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moistturiser SPF 30 for daily wear.
For special occasions I use the Estee LauderDouble Wear LightSoft Matte Hydra Makeup mixed with moisturizer.
Nope. It makes my face feel dirty. Just a little concealer on the tip of my nose and the area from my nose to the corners of my mouth. One small stick of Cle de Peaul lasts a couple of years.
Trick to good foundation is when someone says you have beautiful skin, and don’t even realize you’re wearing foundation. I use IT Cosmetics, discovered many years ago, and since wearing those are the comments I get even from strangers. Look into Thrive cosmetics. I use them for that reason alone and absolutely love their makeup products. Free from carcinogens and other harmful chemicals. You should use a moisturizer with sunscreen like Aveda’s tinted moisturizer. I use it with Boom Stick for color.
To help skin look good, use a good sunscreen, and drink lots of water. The extra water offers many other health benefits too … such as extra energy, and better kidney function. That’s my daily routine … for special occasions, I use a very light foundation, and brush it across uneven skin areas. Keep the lips moisturized – dried lips look old!
I use Sisley Paris Phyto Teint Eclat foundation over Hourglass Veil primer, and I get compliments all the time on my skin. (Not my makeup – my Skin!). I have tried Dior, Chanel, Hourglass, Laura Mercier, Lancôme foundations. There are a lot of good products out there, but what I have found is that matching the shade to your natural skin color is the most important factor in making your skin look natural. Although I loved some of the other oroducts’ Textures, none of the others matches my skin tone as well as Sisley. It looks like I don’t have any foundation on but that my own skin is that smooth! It’s horribly expensive ($122) but worth it! And Hourglass primer makes my skin fee so smooth and sleek, the foundation just slides on smoothly. I also have found that the tools you use to apply your foundation are very important. I use a good foundation brush followed by blotting with a sponge. Topping it all with Laura Mercier translucent setting powder and air ban Decay All Nighter spray makes it last all day!
All of these companies test on animals. It would be good to offer some options that do not. I promise you, if you ever stepped into a lab you would never recommend these products. Animal testing is not OK AND not necessary.

I’ve been using Shiseido Radiant Lifting Foundation for a few years now. I find the coverage medium yet buildable. This radiant lifting foundation is true to its word! I start out with redness and hyper pigmentation and finish with what looks like dewy, clear, healthy, natural looking skin. It is an absolute pleasure to use, because it’s easy to apply and a little goes a long way. Applied over a good primer and sealed with a touch of powder it effortlessly lasts me a good 12 hours, even in extremely hot and humid conditions. I have mature combination skin. I highly recommend this gem of a foundation for mature skin.
If they make you look like you have a lot of make-up on, or settles in your wrinkles I think you’re putting too much on. I’ve decided that the act of applying make-up or moisturizer is an opportunity to massage my face and help refresh it. I swear it’s helped me reduce those little white bumps that can be a plague.
I moisturize, then use the foundation to smooth and even out my skin tone, not to achieve full coverage. I like Armani foundation, it’s very liquid with good coverage, but keep Revlon in my travel bag. The Maybelline B&B with SPF 30 is an excellent weekend, vacation product.
I am not convinced that foundations make us look younger. Mostly they look like we have a lot of make up on.
I have found that foundation sits in the creases and makes me look older so this summer I switched to a light BB cream which gives good results. It also has SPF 30.
Which BB do you use? I’ve used drugstore brands Maybeline, L’oreal, Avon, Physician’s Formula.
I never wear it because it takes me ages to get my skin clean again in the evening. Too lazy for that.
Hi! I haven’t worn foundation in about 15-20 years, because it always made my skin itch, and I thought, made my fine lines perk up a bit. Now I am 50, and I am curious, but I tell you, I am a bit apprehensive about purchasing more and have the same problem. I have found generally, that they highlight my wrinkles, so I have just worn some lotion and walked on. I am used to that now, and am afraid to try! Will the large cosmetic foundation people give me a trial, or can I just get my face done and wait about 2 hours to see what happens? I definitely want to look dewier and a bit more polished, but not like I am trying too hard…
Most department store brands ( including Sephora and prestige cosmetics at Ulta) will let you try on foundations and give you samples. I usually have them apply the foundation I am trying and give me a sample. It is a good idea to wear it for a couple of hours and I never buy a foundation without going outside and checking a mirror. Most of those same products are returnable if they just aren’t working but ask before you buy ( sometimes you have to keep the packaging, sometimes there is a time limit). Drug stores don’t typically have samples you can buy but check about return policies. If you haven’t worn foundations in awhile it may just feel too heavy, you can try a BB or CC cream or a tinted moisturizer. I would recommend you try a primer under your foundation, it really does make a difference.
Try a foundation without bismuth in it. More and more have stopped using it. That is the ingredient that usually make s a person itch.
I also gave up wearing makeup in my early 40’s and chose to wear vitamin E lotions and lip gloss. I love the natural look and it has helped my skin tremendously. I like a natural,clean,fresh look and will never go back to that artificial look.
I don’t use foundation either. Have been using BOOM by Cindy Joseph. It’s absolutely wonderful!
