Many of of you are at home more than usual at the moment. So, now, more than ever, having a closet with plenty of comfy clothes options is a good idea.
Comfy clothes can be stylish too!
While you can stay all day in your pajamas if you wish, you’re likely to want to look and feel more put together than that. But, don’t worry, you don’t need to dig your underwired bra out from the bottom of your closet just yet, or wear anything uncomfortable.
You can stay comfortable but still look stylish and polished, whether you’re working from home or even if you’re just watching Netflix or sitting down with a good book. I’ve teamed up with Nordstrom to bring you a comfy clothing capsule of Nordstrom Made clothing that will see your through winter and beyond.
What you might like to include in your comfy clothing capsule closet
If you’re looking in your closet at the moment and feeling that you don’t have enough comfy, casual clothes to suit your lifestyle, there are some factors you may want to think about when choosing your comfortable clothes to wear at home.
Soft fabrics
First of all, the fabric you choose is important. You’ll want to make sure it feels good to wear and doesn’t restrict you in any way. Think about cozy knitwear, jersey, modal, bamboo and lycra.
Trendy touches
Even though you’re choosing comfy clothes, that doesn’t mean they can’t be on-trend. Look for touches such as on-trend prints and colors, asymmetry or draping.
Elasticated or tie waistbands
While relaxing at home, you’re unlikely to want restrictive button closures or anything too-tight around your waist. Instead, look at waistbands that tie or feature elastic.
Comfy underwear
There’s no point in the rest of your outfit being super comfortable if your underwear is making you feed uncomfortable. You may, for example, prefer full-coverage panties rather than thongs, or bralets rather than underwired bras.
A comfy clothes capsule wardrobe
Let’s take a look at some of the tops, bottoms and accessories you might want to include in a comfy capsule for the upcoming months.
Comfy tops
When choosing tops, you’ll want a relaxed t-shirt as well as some cozy sweaters to wear when the weather turns cold. You could choose draping or a wrap top to elevate your style.
Zella washed pleated t-shirt – Chelsea28 tuck front top – Halogen cashmere sweater – BP. drawstring cowl neck sweater
Outerwear (just in case you need to leave the house)
Of course, you’re unlikely to stay at home 24/7 unless you really have to. If you are popping out to run errands, you could think about adding a wrap coat, a moto jacket or a long cardigan over your outfit.
If you need to raise your style game, a blazer will add instant smartness to even the most casual of looks.

Comfy jeans and pants
When relaxing at home, a pair of stretch leggings or a tie-waist top is the perfect option to choose to stay comfortable. You could also opt for a pair of utility pants or jeans, so long as the waistband doesn’t dig in at all.
Caslon chino pants – Zella leggings – Zella tie-waist pants – Nordstrom Lingerie lounge pants
Comfy dresses and skirts
You’re likely to choose leggings or jeans for casual days, but that doesn’t mean you should discount the option of a dress, skirt, or perhaps a jumpsuit.
Choose stretchy options, such as sweater dresses rather than anything too restrictive and fitted.
Chelsea28 tie waist jumpsuit – Caslon hooded knit tank top – Halogen sweater dress – Halogen sweater skirt
Comfy shoes
You can go barefoot if you wish. But, you may find your feet get too cold, or you may need arch support even though you’re at home.
Choose a pair of slippers, or you could add sneakers or ankle boots to your look if you’ll be heading out during the day.
Caslon lace-up bootie – Treasure & Bond studded bootie – BP. plush bedroom slipper – Caslon wedge sneaker
Comfy accessories
A scarf can keep you warm and help you to feel cozy whether at home or outside. If you are heading out, you may like to take a tote bag or a crossbody with you to fit your essentials in, while a hat will stop heat from escaping on cold days.
If you don’t feel fully dressed without your accessories, you could add a pair of stud earrings or small hoops.

What to wear underneath your comfy outfits
To stay warm, and comfortable, you’ll also want to think about what you wear under your clothes. You could wear a sports bra or bralet rather than an underwired bra. A camisole, vest or bodysuit will help to add warmth.

Sylvia, I love your fashion advise. My question is that I am a warm Autumn with a closet full of black and denim. Should I just add tops in the Autumn colors or start over with the fall basics and build off of that?
Yes, start with the tops. Colors closest to your face are the most important.
Just adding a scarf or a colorful necklace can already make a difference.
Just a short note to say I LOVE your emails – they are so inspirational. From Rachel in Melbourne Australia.
Thanks so much Rachel. Glad you enjoy them!
Do you have recommendations for a travel wardrobe for a week in Palm Springs in December? All the travel capsules I find are for someone 40 years younger than I am! Thank you.
We don’t have a specific travel guide for that place but you may enjoy this article: https://40plusstyle.com/fashionable-travel-clothes/ Also check out my friend’s site https://travelfashiongirl.com which has many travel capsules.
