When you come across the blog Peridot Skies, you immediately find a haven for feminine style with bold patterns and colors. Lisa’s styling and warm charm keep you as engaged as the sartorial surprises she throws in. We were excited to interview Lisa and learn more about the chic midwestern gal’s style. Enjoy!
Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself?
I am a born and bred midwestern gal, living in Oklahoma my whole life until 11 years ago. Ready for an adventure, I bought a plot of land and built a house. I quit my job, sold my house, packed up my boys and moved my family to the Kansas City area.
I wasn’t sure what I would do but I knew I would love it. I work in health care full time during the day and blog in the evenings. I am co founder of The Blog Guild and love all the friends I have made thru blogging.
As a point of reference which age group do you belong to or perhaps you are willing to share your age?
I am 51.
Can you tell us a bit more about your blog Peridot Skies?
My blog is about embracing your style and not conforming to rules or trends. What you wear and how you wear it is important. Your style is a reflection of who you are and I love sharing with others that stepping out of their comfort zone is a wonderful confident booster.
How would you describe your own personal style?
My style is bold and yet feminine. I am not afraid to try something that I know fits my shape and I never am afraid to pattern mix.
What would you consider the most important components of your style?
Staying true to myself above everything else. Jewelry plays a large part as well as investment pieces. I consider my most important component to my style is knowing what absolutely does not work for me regardless of trends, styles, or designers.
Where do you live and how does that influence your style?
I live in the midwest. Kansas City to be exact. I am always seeking fresh designs and looking for something that is not offered in the masses. The midwest is always 2 years behind in fashion from either coast. Sad, but true so boutiques offer less mass merchandising which is what I crave. I don’t want to blend in, I want to stand out.
Do you feel you have a signature style?
Not really. It runs the gamut. If I had to pick something then a signature style for me would be the color pink. If it comes in pink I probably will want to own it. But honestly my signature style would be classy with an edge and a pop of leopard!
What inspires your outfit choices the most?
Believe it or not I find a lot of outfit inspirations from interior decorating. The patterns and mixing of pillows and fabrics. Paint colors with wall papers. I love a great pattern mix.
Do you take things like color profiling or body type into account when you dress?
I definitely take these things into consideration. Knowing what works for you is a key component to dressing your best. Colors that make you feel good and lines that flow well with your body are going to naturally make you carry yourself with confidence (A woman’s true best accessory).
Has your style changed at all after turning 40?
I wouldn’t say it has changed drastically. The biggest asset to my style changing after 40 is the ability to have more disposable income to invest in more quality items.
Do you believe in dressing ‘age appropriately’ and what does it mean to you?
Hmmm, age appropriate is a tricky question. I believe in age appropriate dressing. But I also believe that you determine your own age appropriate. The way you dress should reflect who you are regardless of age as long as it’s tasteful.
Would you say that at this stage of your life you are now more, or less interested in fashion, style and the way you look?
I have always been interested in fashion and my style has always been important to me. At this stage of my life I would have to say I have more interest with fashion and style. Being a mother to all boys, I alway want to show them that a woman who takes care of herself is a quality they should look for in a wife.
Why is the way you look important to you?
The way you look is sharing who you are without ever having to speak a word. If you feel good in what you are wearing it will show.
Do you follow trends? And if yes, which trends excite you at the moment?
I do not follow trends. That’s not to say I never have, but I follow my shape and style first, then if the trends fits I may follow it.
Do you have any fashion and style tips for women over 40?
Be true to your shape and know what colors to avoid. Always take a true friend shopping if you want honest clothing advice, and always buy right and aim for investment pieces.
What are your plans for your blog and how do you see it developing over the coming years?
I just rebranded and could not be more excited for where my blog is going. I plan to continue sharing inspiration to my readers and connect brands and readers that otherwise they may not be introduced to. Being a brand ambassador to my favorite brand is a goal I hope to work towards this year.
Anything further you would like to add?
I give great advice and do not always act my age. I am a social butterfly who can walk into a room knowing no one and leave with a dozen friends. I have a sarcastic sense of humor and a gentle caring heart for others in need. I believe in paying it forward and there are no accidents without value. Thank you for asking these questions.

Nice to see somebody who’s bodyshape is like mine. There isn’t one outfit I don’t like, but I especially love that long red shirt outfit, the gorgeous animal print outfit (underneath the heading “do you believe in dressing ‘age appropriately’ and the relaxed checked denim outfit underneath it.
