What type of coat to choose?
We’ll run you through the main winter coat trends in a moment. But what should you be thinking about when opting for your next winter coat? Well, two main things – casual or formal? And, how warm do you need it to be to suit the weather where you are. It’s likely you’ll want at least a couple of winter coats – a more casual look, such as a puffer or parka, for weekend walks, and a more formal look for work, dinner, and wearing over your dressier outfits.
coat trends
Let’s dive into the major coat trends of this season. We’re sure there’s something you love, no matter what your style personality is.
Smart wool coats
Let’s start with an absolute classic – a beautiful wool coat. Look out for quality materials like merino wool or cashmere to give your outfit a luxe feel. Opt for belted styles if you want to accentuate or create the illusion of an hourglass figure. More angular shapes work well for more angular figures, such as rectangles and inverted triangles. Choose a longer style for added warmth and drama, or opt for a shorter style for a more casual look. We particularly love the minimalist look of COS’s shawl-collar wool coat.

fluffy
Textured coats, such as teddy bear and shearling styles, are perfect for adding warmth and character to winter wardrobes. Teddy coats, with their plush, fuzzy finish, offer a cosy and playful look that feels like wrapping up in a soft blanket, making them ideal for casual layering. Shearling coats, on the other hand, combine luxurious texture with a more structured silhouette, often featuring suede exteriors and wool-lined interiors for a sophisticated yet practical appeal. Both styles not only provide excellent insulation but also bring a tactile element to outfits, elevating simple ensembles with rich texture and timeless charm.
Additionally, refer to our article on how to mix textures for more inspiration.

puffer
Puffer coats are a winter essential, combining practicality with modern style. With a quilted design and insulated padding, they provide exceptional warmth without adding too much bulk, making them perfect for cold-weather layering. If you really want to be warm, a puffer coat is the best option. Look for either down or synthetic fills – whichever you prefer, and check the fill power. Anything over 700 will keep you very cozy. In addition to style, look for practical details such as water-resistant fabrics and hoods. If it’s not super cold where you are, or you get too warm in a coat while hiking, then a sleeveless choice is a good choice.

Parkas
Similar to the puffer, but without the quilting, a parka is another great choice for cooler weather and casual days. Longer line parkas will keep you warm and dry. Look for detailing like big pockets and fur-lined hoods. We love the contrast pockets on the Helly Hansen parka (below).

plaid
A coat is a major investment for your closet. So, if you do go for a print, make it a timeless one like plaid. We’re loving all the plaid jackets and coats in stores right now. You can keep the rest of your outfit fairly plain and still make a significant impact with your look.

scarf coats
A niche trend for this year, but one that is still timeless enough to continue to wear year after year, is the coat with an integrated scarf. A great way to keep your neck warm and add an element of fun to your look. Plus, you don’t have to worry about forgetting or losing your scarf. Choose a short jacket or long coat – both are on trend. The BCBG embroidered coat (below) is very similar to the maje designer version, but at a fraction of the cost.

brown
Okay, not a trend as such, but a color, we know. However, deep brown is definitely having a moment this season, so if you’re considering any of the winter coat trends we’ve shown you so far, you could add another trend and make it brown.
Take a look at our article brown as the new black for more beautiful dark brown outfits for the cooler months.

barn
We’ve discussed two casual styles so far: the puffer and the parka. Let’s now add the barn jacket into the mix. Not as warm as some of its filled counterparts, the barn jacket is ideal if the weather isn’t super cold where you are. If you don’t think a jacket will keep you cozy enough, then stick with the barn styling, but opt for a longer version, like the J.Crew coat (below).

Leopard
Another print for you now. Leopard print is very much on trend at the moment, but is also a timeless pattern – just like plaid. You can add as much or as little as you want, and you can combine trends to create your own unique look. For a subtle approach, add a leopard print collar. Or, for a more glamorous look, choose a long, animal-print coat. You can also combine two styles in one by mixing leopard print with faux fur.
