Tailoring has moved away from the boardroom over several seasons, and this fall it’s less about looking corporate and more about adding a little structure and polish to your everyday wardrobe.
Modern tailoring is relaxed rather than rigid.
Blazers are softer and slightly oversized, pants are wider and more fluid, and traditional suiting is being mixed with everything from T-shirts and knitwear to denim and sneakers. And as we head into party season, tailoring also offers a chic alternative to a dress. A beautifully cut suit or tuxedo-style blazer and pants can look just as special, especially when paired with silk, lace, velvet, metallics, or statement jewelry.
That’s what makes modern tailoring such a useful trend to embrace. You don’t need a full suit, and you certainly don’t need an office dress code to make it work. One beautifully cut jacket or pair of tailored pants can make even the simplest outfit feel more considered.
Below, we’re looking at the key pieces to choose and, most importantly, how to wear them in a way that feels contemporary rather than corporate.
Where to look for modern tailoring
If you want to add more tailoring to your wardrobe, these brands are great places to start.
Start with a relaxed blazer
The easiest way to add modern tailoring to your wardrobe is with a blazer, but skip anything too stiff or fitted.
Look for a slightly relaxed silhouette with enough room to layer a T-shirt, shirt or fine knit underneath. A single-breasted style is particularly versatile, while a double-breasted blazer gives you a little more drama.
Black and navy will always be useful, but this season is also a good time to consider chocolate brown, burgundy, olive, camel or gray.
Wear yours with jeans and sneakers for everyday, over a dress for structure, or with matching pants for a fully tailored look.

Choose wider pants
Modern tailoring has also changed the shape of our pants.
Instead of narrow, traditionally tailored trousers, look for wider, more fluid silhouettes. Pleats, softly structured waistbands and beautiful drape all add to the relaxed feel.
Wide-leg tailored pants can actually be one of the most comfortable pieces in your wardrobe, particularly if you choose a fabric with a little stretch.
Wear them with a tucked-in shirt or fine knit for a polished look, or add a T-shirt and sneakers to make them feel more casual.

Try a waistcoat
The tailored waistcoat has moved far beyond the three-piece suit.
Wear one on its own as a top, layered over a shirt or fine knit, or underneath a blazer. Choose a matching waistcoat and pants for a streamlined look, or deliberately mix yours with denim.
A longer waistcoat can also be a great layering piece, creating strong vertical lines without adding the weight of a jacket.
For fall, try one with wide-leg pants, loafers and a fine knit underneath.

You don’t have to wear a complete suit
Perhaps the easiest way to make tailoring feel modern is to split it up.
Wear your tailored blazer with jeans. Pair suit pants with a cashmere sweater. Add a waistcoat to a denim outfit.
You’ll get far more wear from tailored pieces if you stop thinking of them as something that has to be worn together.
Of course, a complete suit can look fabulous too. The trick is what you pair it with.

Make your suit more casual
If you do wear matching tailoring, add something unexpected.
A simple white T-shirt and sneakers instantly relax a pantsuit, while a fine knit and loafers create an elegant everyday outfit.
You can also push the contrast further by wearing a sweatshirt or hoodie under your blazer.
This is particularly useful if you already have suits in your wardrobe that feel a little too formal. Before replacing them, experiment with what you’re wearing underneath and on your feet.
Mix tailoring with denim
Denim and tailoring are natural partners because each balances the other.
A blazer instantly makes jeans look more polished, while denim keeps tailoring from feeling too formal.
Try straight- or wide-leg jeans with a blazer, a simple T-shirt, and loafers. Or pair a denim shirt with tailored pants, then add a belt and a structured bag.
Dark denim works best if you want a smarter look, while faded denim creates more contrast.

Play with proportions
One of the biggest differences between classic and modern tailoring is proportion.
Try an oversized blazer with a slimmer bottom half, or wide-leg tailored pants with a shorter jacket or more fitted top.
You can also pair a longline blazer with a column of color underneath to create a strong vertical silhouette, a great way to look taller and slimmer if you want.
If oversized tailoring feels overwhelming, don’t abandon the trend. Just choose one relaxed element instead of volume from head to toe.

Add knitwear
As the weather gets cooler, tailoring and knitwear make a beautiful combination.
A fine-gauge sweater tucked into wide-leg pants creates a streamlined silhouette, while a chunkier knit worn with tailored trousers gives you that appealing mix of structure and softness.
You can also layer a sweater underneath your blazer or drape one over your shoulders.
Choose cashmere, merino, or another fine knit if you want to avoid bulk under a jacket.

Define your waist if you want to
Relaxed tailoring doesn’t have to mean hiding your shape.
Look for blazers with subtle waist shaping, add a belt over your jacket, or choose high-waisted tailored pants with a tucked-in top.
Peplum jackets and nipped-waist blazers are also returning and featured heavily on the fall 2026 catwalk, offering an alternative to the oversized silhouettes we’ve seen in recent seasons.
The key is choosing the proportion you feel best in, rather than assuming modern tailoring has to be oversized.

Look beyond black and embrace color and texture
Black tailoring is timeless, but color can make a classic silhouette feel much more contemporary.
Chocolate brown is a particularly sophisticated alternative, while burgundy, aubergine, olive and deep green work beautifully for fall. Or choose something completely unexpected like teal or florals.
You can also try a lighter neutral such as cream, oatmeal or camel. A simple color change can pull a suit out of traditional workwear territory.

Don’t forget checks and pinstripes
Print is another way to make tailoring more interesting.
Checks and heritage patterns suit fall, while pinstripes offer a subtle nod to traditional menswear.
If a complete checked or striped suit feels too much, choose one piece. A checked blazer looks fantastic with denim, while pinstripe pants pair well with a simple sweater or T-shirt. Keep everything else relatively understated and let your tailoring become the focus.

Take tailoring into the evening
Don’t reserve your tailoring for daytime. A tuxedo-style blazer or beautifully cut pants can be every bit as elegant as a dress for dinner or a party.
Wear a blazer with a silk camisole, lace top or nothing underneath except a beautiful necklace, depending on how much coverage you prefer. Add tailored pants and heels or embellished flats.
A velvet blazer is another great option as we head towards party season.
Mix masculine and feminine pieces
Modern tailoring works particularly well when you play with contrasts.
Pair a masculine blazer with a silk or lace blouse. Wear wide tailored pants with a fitted knit. Add a blazer to a satin skirt or floaty dress.
You can also use accessories to change the mood. A structured suit with delicate jewelry and ballet flats feels very different from the same suit worn with loafers and a crisp shirt.
It’s these contrasts that stop tailoring from feeling predictable.

Think about your shoes
Your footwear can completely change the way tailoring looks.
Loafers are an obvious partner and work particularly well if you like a classic or slightly preppy aesthetic.
Sneakers immediately make tailoring more casual, while ballet flats and pointed flats create a softer look.
Ankle boots work beautifully through fall and winter, and heels will take your tailoring into evening.
Instead of asking which shoes you should wear with a suit, think about where you’re going and how formal you want the outfit to feel.

accessories
Accessories are a great way to give modern tailoring a little personality and stop it feeling too corporate. Add a beautiful leather belt, structured or slouchy bag and statement jewelry to elevate your look, or try a silk scarf and elegant shoes for a softer, more feminine finish. For evening, swap your everyday bag for a clutch and add bold earrings or metallic accessories.
