The ultimate guide of bags for Fall 2012

best bags for fall

Wow there are more than 1900 different bags to choose from for Fall 2012. That is a lot of bags! So let’s have a look at some of the best bags designers showed us for Fall 2012 and what bags you need.

(see picture above) Acoording to Wikipedia  a satchel is “a bag, often with a strap. The strap is often worn so that it diagonally crosses the body, with the bag hanging on the opposite hip, rather than hanging directly down from the shoulder. They are traditionally used for carrying books. The main difference between a satchel and a briefcase is that a satchel is soft-sided. Also, satchels often have straps while briefcases usually don’t.”. Now I don’t think the above quite match that description, but says they are satchels and so they sit here in that category as well. In any case the above bags are gorgeous. Probably the most timeless one is this Alexander McQueen bag. So chic!

Clutches for Fall 2013

According to the dictionary a clutch is “A woman’s purse that is strapless and carried in the hand”. I have always found these rather unhandy as I like to use my hands for other things and get my bag out of the way. Nevertheless there is no denying that they can be very elegant. And they are an excellent way to add some fashion to an outfit. Like to keep your outfit simple and elegant? No problem! Just add one of these super fashionable clutches and you will look instantly hip! I  could not resist adding the clutch version of the Alexander McQueen bag as well. It’s so timelessly elegant…

totes Fall 2013

The wiki definition of a tote bag is “a large and often unfastened bag, with parallel handles that emerge from the sides of its pouch. Clearly all the above bags don’t match this definition, still classified them as totes, so that is where they will be here as well. I’m getting increasinly fond of tote bags since I like to carry my big and heavy camera with me. These bags can fit everything (which is usually a lot) I like to bring with me. And if they are as fabulous as the ones above, then even your most boring outfit will look better for it.

hobos trends

This is another favorite of mine, but you can argue that the examples above don’t entirely meet the description. According to wikipedia a hobo bag is  “a style of handbag or purse that is typically large and characterized by a crescent shape, a slouchy posture and a long strap designed to wear over the shoulder. Hobo bags are made out of soft, flexible materials and tend to slump, or slouch, when set down.”. I’m loving the bags above though. The blue one has an unexpected but very elegant bottom. The Missoni bag is an excellent way to add some pattern to your outfit and the Tila March bag is a perfect way to add some yellow. I really like the design of that one too!

Shoulder bags

A shoulder bag is a bag with a long strap that is hung over the shoulder. These bags are very chic and elegant, but for me often too small. Still I’m drooling over the examples above. Perhaps I should just be happy to take my small camera sometimes….

Evening bags

These handbags are worn with evening wear. Many are sparkly and shiny and glamorous. Both of these would fit very well in my wardrobe indeed.

I don’t think anyone will have much trouble finding a great handbag this fall! Which is your favorite?

I have many bags, and my strong preference is always for hobos or totes. I have a few different styles, but really, I need the ability to keep my hands free, to get into and out of my bags quickly, and above all else, to sling it over my shoulder. I really love those brightly-coloured Coach totes.

Yes, those Coach ones are cute. Great for a pop of colour!

I sure love that Chanel evening bag. When can I expect its delivery? 😉

It’s gorgeous isn’t it. I don’t think any has shipped just yet….

Handbags are usually impulse purchases for me. I see it,I like it, I buy it! Unfortunately that means I have three green purses and not a single brown one. I think this fall I’ll be looking for a good classic brown leather something, not sure what style though.

Sounds like a good plan. Have fun shopping!

Beautiful selecton. I also like the Coach bags the best. Very nice and you can use them with lots of outfits. I prefer handbags of one colour (although my two recent Rome bags have handles of a different colour…). Patterns on bags make them harder to match. At least for me.
I agree with you Sylvia, that the black and white Alexander McQueen bags are extremely desirable.
What I miss are “normal” handbags with handles to hold them and no shoulder strap (or just as an alternative). Like the Hepburn bag or the Birkin bag. Are they “out”? Or not your style as they are unhandy?

I think there are plenty of bags with just handles. My eye did not fall on those probably as I find these kind of bags very unpractical. Although I have bags with handles I always make sure that they come with a strap as well!

Lol at Heather. She just summed up my whole approach to when I end up buying a hand bag. I usually end up happy with my impulse buys because I’m trusting my gut:)… These fall styles look amazing!

I like to buy on impulse too, but I do remember what I already have and am careful not to buy too many handbags. It’s difficult to store them all!

My favorite styles are small crossbody bags. I like the hands-free aspect. All I ever need to put in my bag is wallet, checkbook, sunglasses, phone, and maybe a pen or two. Small is good, and I like pockets and dividers — I hate fishing around for stuff on the bottom of a big unstructured bag. I’m probably going to get one from Ellington that I’ve had my eye on.

Those bags are usually too small for me, but I think you are right that they are the most comfortable ones!

The Anya Hindmarch Satchel is AMAZING. I am always on the go and love having a bag that is smaller than a messenger bag but just as functional! Plus I don’t think I have ever loved a bag as much as I love this one!

Yes, that is a pretty amazing bag!

I need the ability to keep my hands free, to get into and out of my bags quickly, and above all else, to sling it over my shoulder. I really love those brightly-coloured Coach totes.

Sounds like you are the same as me! Thank you for your comment!

I often end up with totes for exactly the same reason you mention…I want to carry all of my stuff…water bottle, book, camera, sweater (when not wearing it), etc. I keep trying to go to smaller shoulder bags but can’t seem to do it. Most of my bags (I have less than 10) are a neutral color, but my “go to” travel bag is my Ferragamo tote with their classic leopard print (like their scarves). (Can’t figure out how to attach a pic). My newest acquisition in a Chloe satchel (the “Marcie” style). It was a bit steep in price, but I think it will be perfect.

Hi Rita. It sounds to be that you are making smart choices. Few, but high quality neutral bags is a good way to go. I just bought a smaller bag that I can extend from designer Heleen van der Meer Will show it to you in an upcoming article…

I can’t wait to see which colors you got! They are all so pretty, and the ability to expand them or reduce them so versatile. I’ve not seen that designer’s label in the U.S. I’ll have to look out for it. Have a great weekend!

there was a time when i was ‘collecting’ bags of different shapes, materials and colors! i ended up loving functional and stylish totes, hobos and sometimes the crossbody ones in neutral colors mainly and occasionally with a splash of color. for outdoor activities and summer holidays at the islands, i adore funky backpacks! by the way, there is an amazing Museum of bags and purses in Amsterdam (near Rembrandsplein) which worths a visit even if one is not a bag maniac!
