We’ve already brought you all of the best spring and summer trends for 2018. But, we don’t think you’re ever truly fully dressed without accessories. 40+ stylist Ruth Essex has spoken about her love of accessories.

After all, as Ruth points out, no matter what size you are, accessories always fit!

Carefully chosen accessories can make or break an outfit, transforming an otherwise run-of-the-mill look into something truly stylish, and providing an easy way to update your existing wardrobe.

Here are some of the best looks from the runways, and the high street, in stores now.

Mini handbags

We know – they won’t fit much in! But, if you’re popping out for date night or dinner with the girls, what else do you need but your credit card, phone, keys and lipstick?

Mini ladies’ handbags were seen either slung over the shoulder or held casually by the strap from designers including Versace, Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera and Alexander Wang.

But, you don’t need a big budget for a tiny bag. Thankfully, the high street now has plenty of options for spring and summer.

In stores now:

Round sunglasses, sports sunglasses and cat eye sunglasses

While young models like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner have been rocking teeny-tiny sunglasses, pretty much no bigger than their eyeballs, this trend can be incredibly hard to wear.

Thankfully, while there were plenty of mini sunglasses on the runways for spring/summer 2018, cat eye, sporty and round sunglasses are also big trends for this season.

So, rather than simply following fads, you can choose which one best suits your face shape and your overall style.

In stores now:

Straw hats

We’re all aware that sun damage can cause skin damage. And, this season, keeping your face shaded has never looked so stylish!

Designers sent models down the spring/summer runways wearing a whole host of hats, from oversized to cowboy, boaters to berets – just as long as they were made of straw! Grab yourself one now if you’re planning a summer vacay!

In stores now:

Beautiful brooches

Spring and summer trend: brooches | 40plusstyle.com

Brooches can be a great way to take one outfit and style it several different ways, as demonstrated in our earlier post on how to enhance a basic outfit.

This season, brooches have a sculptural feel in golds and silvers as seen at Céline and Louis Vuitton. Meanwhile, Mui Mui went for a blingier approach, adorning its brooches with gemstone flowers.

You can play around with the positioning of your brooches, pinning them on the lapels of your blazer, at the throat of your blouse or even on your hat.

In stores now:

Pearls

Our stylist Ruth Essex even keeps what she calls her “emergency pearls” on board when she goes sailing! And, we can understand why. There’s probably not an outfit that pearls won’t go with.

While pearls are never truly out of style, this season, they’re very much on trend.

So, if you have a pair of pearl earrings or a pearl necklace lurking in the back of your jewelry box, now’s the time to bring them out. They look particularly beautiful worn against darker colors.

In stores now:

Statement necklaces

We’re big fans of the statement necklace at 40+. With a carefully chosen statement necklace, you can instantly uplift an outfit. Add to a white shirt and jeans to give a casual outfit some pizzazz or to an evening dress for added wow.

Elie Saab opted for long draped necklaces while Altuzarra and Isabel Marant chose shorter styles which would look particularly great on pear shaped figures as they draw attention upwards, away from your hips.

Which of these Spring/Summer 2018 accessory trends will you be wearing? Do you already have some of these in your existing wardrobe?

Hi Sylvia, just re-read Ruth’s introduction, what a charming person she is, and such a fabulous writer!
Yesterday I wore my great-grandmother’s cameo for the first time in many years – it’s one of those items you save for a special occasion – my son got married so I wore it with pride. The only reason I don’t wear it more often is the catch is a bit ‘dodgy’ and I’d hate to lose it! But in looking for it I found four pearl necklaces that mum had given me from her stash, I used to wear them so often back in the 80s (anyone remember Princess Diana setting the pearl, lace, bows and ruffles trend??) Must start wearing mine again.
Sunglasses, I’m afraid I’m at the stage where they are prescription sunglasses, but I do love mine, the are large and lovely and I get many compliments and feel really good wearing them.
Also getting very good at wearing sunhats these days with the thinning ozone layer, and working on those statement necklaces 🙂

Sunhats are also something I will rock this spring and summer 2018.Church, weddings, summer barques. A hat can be cute, protect from sun, and bring that celebrity status to ensamble. Throw on cute sundress, hat, wegrs, mini purse statement neckace and you look cute in summer. I also live my sun glasses. I like the Jackie Kennedy type sunglasses. I had beautiful pair sunglasses I had for years I got when I sold Avon. It got broken in my work tote. I just bought new sunglasses on 1/18. I got three pairs for three dollars and twenty-four cents ($3.24). Yes three dollars it was each marked down one dollar at Walmart eyeglass counter. I got black and brown pair and red hearts with white dots. Originallly were ten for black and brown and red was five dollars. Instead spending $twenty-five dollars I got all for three dollars and twenty-four cents. My motto Sylvia is fabulous on a budget. I want be cute, fashion coninous age appropriate but I can’t afford live outside of my means. I learn get stuff when on sale but get quality pieces I will love wearing . No matter age style fashion should be fun and way you express yourself to world.

Sylvia, this is exciting news for me. I love accessories and already have everything mentioned here. My only recent purchase was a gorgeous Chanel inspired blush pink (with gold link accents) cross body bag that is smaller than the normal size purse I carry. It’s a mini bag for me…lol. So I’m all set with all the spring inspired accessories! Thank you for sharing.

I like the straw hat trend. Too bad it is for weekends and vacation only. However, the huge big brooch trend works for the office.

Oh those Sonia Rykiel pearls… fantastic. Straw hats? Lovely but not for me, hats in summer are too hot for me. Mini bags, brooches? Got them!
