Sheer can add a lot of interest to your clothes.
It’s a great way to layer in summer and add interest with different textures.
Here is how I wore sheer tops previously and sheer skirts like my black sheer skirt here and here and a camel sheer skirt.
Today let’s have a look at a few more sheer looks spotted in New York.
1. Mixing leather with boho
This look combines several textures and creates a very modern 70s look.
2. Nude layering
Nude colors become a lot more interesting with sheer elements.
3. Purple sheer
I like this woman’s top but think the outfit could have been better proportioned with a longer skirt.
4. Sheer stripes
I love the sheer stripes of this skirt which make for a more interesting look.
5. Black and nude
Sheer gives you the opportunity to be sexy in a mini skirt while still having full coverage of your legs. This is a great example of well-proportioned and balanced outfit.
6. White and orange
A little more daring with just the bra worn underneath. I like the idea of this outfit but would have preferred a longer skirt for a nicer silhouette.
Do you like to wear sheer? Which of the above is your favorite outfit?

The peek-a-boo aspect of sheer is a saucy touch any woman can pull off, it just depends on how much you dare or care! I love the sense of mystery,….I’m all for it, be bold, throw caution to the wind, and embrace this playfull touch.
A finger in a net glove will be sexier than a whole hand! It’s not what you show, how much you show, but how you show it…Grrrrrr!
OK I am not a fan of this style. As I don’t like any of them. Oh well… it had to happen one time.
C’mom Greetje, you would look great in #2 and #3 🙂
#5 Nude and black is my favorite followed by second choice #1. I agree with the previous comments relating to the remaining looks. If you are on the younger side of +40 and can rock the sheer look – go for it. I have 3 sheer tops that I like but since I am older I wear them very selectively.
I am not a big fan of sheer because it really requires layering, which, unless it is cold, I also don’t care for. I don’t like to pay for two items to wear on top (or bottom) when just one nice item would do. I do like the striped skirt in #4. It looks more textured than sheer.
Did anyone notice that almost everyone has their phones in their hand. What did we ever do with our hands before we had to carry those around? LOL!
I love the look of #1, but it is so hot here right now and leather makes me sweat just thinking about it. I also think #5 is gorgeous, but it is not a look I’d emulate.
Ohh my god! The skirt with stripes is looking cool!! I loved the design!
All lovely but the black top with the cream skirt is stunning.
Good tips and examples. Like some of the other commenters, I’ve been scared to wear sheer. Layering helps allay that fear and these combinations are quite appealing.
As hot as it is today in NYC (93 deg F) those outfits look very sensible 🙂
The black and nude look is classy with just a touch of sexy and she has the right figure to pull off the look.
I like the purple top where only the sleeves are truly sheer. I’d pair it with something a little more modest on the bottom though. Sheer makes me nervous also.
With sheer, midlife ladies need to be careful not to come off as trying to compete with 20 year olds…it can often look inappropriate if we are not careful. This actually ages us when we often think it is doing the opposite. I have seen sheer looks which are chic and elegant, but I just do not see any here. I understand why it makes Ellen nervous…it has to be styled just right.
Sheer makes me a little nervous. I think the stripes are the most “wearable”. Lovely outfits on beautiful women, but I just know that I’d be out of my comfort zone in anything too bare.
I actually think I like the black & nude one the best…although I’m not sure I would have thought to pair the two pieces together (maybe because I don’t own any crop tops!!) jodie
