How to wear polkadots this summer

Polka dots have been in style since the Fifties when they were a favorite of screen siren Marilyn Monroe.

While I wouldn’t call it a comeback, as they’ve never been out of fashion, polka dots are definitely having a moment this summer.

Big or small, polka dots have featured on the SS18 catwalks of Dior, Marc Jacobs, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana. (see a complete overview of summer trends here).

I purchased a fabulous red polkadot top on my recent trip to Greece. (For more inspiration on wearing read you may also enjoy this article on how to wear red).

I have also enjoyed wearing my gray polkadot skirt this summer (for much more inspiration you may enjoy my article on how to wear gray).

Here are some of the best polka dot pieces in store now…

Polka dot twist dress

This polka dot dress comes with a twist, quite literally. The draped effect on this Eliza J dress is very figure flattering. It’s also very versatile. You could style with heels for a formal occasion, or wear with sneakers for a more casual vibe.

Polka dot blazer

Wearing your polka dots on a blazer is unusual yet stylish. I’d keep the rest of your outfit simple to let this stand-out piece from Topshop take center stage!

Polka dot blouse

I love the contrast of the larger dots on the body combined with smaller dots on the sleeves in this piece from Anne Klein.

Another versatile piece that could be styled in so many ways, you could wear with other neutrals, or with a red pencil skirt or pants, or with jeans for a smart-casual look.

Ruffled tie-waist top

With feminine frills and a waist-defining belt, this polka dot top from Halogen could be perfect for adding, or enhancing curves.

Voluminous dress

I know this dress will probably divide opinion like Marmite, but I love the oversized nature of this design from Caara.

It reminds me of Victoria Beckham’s designs, without such a high price tag! You could wear it as it is, or add a wide belt in a contrasting color like red!

Here are some more polka dot looks, including some fabulous shoes and scarves, to choose from.

There are also plenty of polka dots in this style interview with Patricia.

Do you already have polka dots in your closet? Or do you have your eye on a polka dot piece you love? How do you wear yours?

For somebody who adores polka dots, I have amazingly little garments with polka dots.
Perhaps it is time to set that right.
