While it must be nice to be able to add whatever pieces you want to your wardrobe each season, with money no object, how many items do we really need in order to update our closet?

Whether you have set yourself a spring and summer clothing budget of a few dollars, or thousands, there are certain key items which have become the hero pieces of this season.

Just adding one of these 5 pieces, which we’ve seen on the runways, on fashion week front rows and on the Instagram pages of countless fashionistas, could provide an instant update to your existing outfits.

1. The straw bag

You don’t need to spend thousands to own the IT bag of the moment. That being said, you can if you want to! Dolce & Gabbana, Jimmy Choo and Miu Miu have all released versions of the basket bag. But, thankfully, so too have lots of brands on the high street.

The humble basket bag, which first made its mark in the Seventies, is back. With a distinctly rustic, carefree vibe, it’s the sort of piece you’d imagine chic French women carrying while they head to the market. Add some je n’ais ce quoi to your own outfits with one of these.

2. The white mules

It feels like every fashion house has their own version of the white mule this season. Proenza Schouler, Gucci, Prada, Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin have all embraced a whiter shade of pale! These versions are more pocket-friendly.

3. The platform sneaker

I can’t remember a season when flat shoes have been so on-trend. Whether you choose to wear a mule or sneakers, heels have definitely been kicked into touch in favor of comfy shoes. Platform sneakers are a key piece for this season. You could team with number 5!

4. Anything with embroidery

Designers have embraced the trend for more-is-more this spring, so anything with embroidery or embellishments is a great addition to your existing wardrobe. It means you can keep the rest of your outfit simple and let one piece do the shouting!

5. Wide-legged pants

Love ’em or hate ’em, skinny jeans seem to have been relegated to the back of the wardrobe this season, in favor of wide-legged pants. Opt for a cropped pair for summer and go for stripes, florals or a bright color like red or yellow to tick off two trends in one.

Great timely article thanks! Do you have any advice for wide legged pants and body type? I’m an hourglass and I don’t think this would be my most flattering cut.

So long as you pay attention to proportion and highlight your waist and tuck in your top, I don’t see why you can’t wear them. More tips here https://40plusstyle.com/wide-legged-pants-how-to-wear-them-and-where-to-buy/
