What to wear on Mother's Day, outfit ideas from casual to chic to try | 40plusstyle.com

Mother’s Day, one of the best days of the year!

The day when we celebrate our own mothers and grandmothers, be celebrated by our children, AND that one day when we don’t have to cook, make plans for dinner or do the dishes (hopefully!).

Whether your day is a casual BBQ or picnic with the family or a dressier brunch with loved ones, we’ve put together some outfit ideas to help you feel stylish and pulled together on your special day this year.

We’ve grouped outfit ideas into 2 categories, casual outfits, and dressier styles.

Here are some ideas for a casual look

If you are wearing denim, try something new, instead of wearing jeans, layer a white denim jacket over a casual dress. Add neutral woven accessories to add contrast and texture.

Integrate one of spring’s big trends and try a colorful, floral print skirt with a bright cardigan, or floral cropped pants for an on-trend look. Pair with bright shoes and colorful handbags.

Make a jumpsuit instantly more casual by topping it with a denim jacket and mules.

Dressier Mother’s Day style

If you are heading to a dressier affair, don’t think you automatically have to wear a dress. Opt for one of this season’s trends, the wide leg pants. Choose a striped, neutral palette for a chic look. Wide leg pants are flattering on many different body types. To lengthen your legs and appear slimmer, pair with shoes in the same tone and add a bit of a heel.

Don’t rule out the ease of a jumpsuit, either in patterns or solids, a jumpsuit is an easy option to add style. Add polish to this look with a structured bag and statement jewelry.

If you do choose a dress, try out a shade of rosy blush rather than black for a sophisticated, classic silhouette in a softer shade.

Personally, I often wear pants. They are easy to move in and suit my casual style. I’ll be attending a casual brunch in my neighborhood, so I’ll opt for a colorful top and black cropped pants with a statement necklace and platform lace-up loafers.

I love the bright jewel teal of this Covered Perfectly wrap top and will wear with my cropped trousers for a casual but pulled together look. This top which I featured in a previous story on how to select tops that hide your tummy is now on sale for only a few days (use this link at Covered Perfectly and when you buy any 2 items on their site, you’ll get the 3rd item free).  (This top comes in great jewel tones and basic neutrals, and it hides major muffin top too).

No matter what you choose to wear, we hope you enjoy a wonderful, special day with family and friends. Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at 40 Plus Style!

I’ll be going to dinner at a friend’s house and will take some inspiration from the first group of colorful casual pieces. It’s been so darn cold and rainy I will definitely need a pants with a jacket or sweater combination amped up with a colorful print top. I might even need to accessorize with a scarf to keep warm!

I love to wear a longish flowy romantic type of dress in pink with a floral pattern..
Gold purse, belt and shoes. And a floral scented perfume. Not sure if the weather will cooperate with my springish outfit, otherwise I’m going all black. I will enjoy the day but unfortunately it’s Mother’s Day, my birthday. and my brother’s birthday. I feel sort of ripped off.

Your Mothers Day looks are fabulous. I would like them ALL for an interesting and cheerful summer wardrobe. They are a great enough inspiration for me to address the challenge in disguising or losing my enlarged midriff!
