What is a hair spa and how does it work?

Phyto Hair Spa Singapore review

One of the perks of having an online fashion and beauty magazine is that you get invited to try out products and services. I’m actually very selective about the invitations I accept and only go for those services or products that I feel are of benefit or interest to all of you.

I know for a fact that many of you (including me) struggle to keep your hair in tip top condition. So when I was invited to try out a hair treatment at Phyto Hair Spa, I was keen to give it a try.

What is a hair spa?

A hair spa is a hair treatment that helps to either maintain or restore the healthy condition of your hair. In addition to your hair treatment you will also receive either a scalp, shoulder and / or neck massage as part of the session as well.

A treatment can also help with common hair problems such as hairloss & thinning hair, irritable scalp or hair issues caused by aging.

How does it work?

When you come in for your first visit you sit down with a hair consultant who examines your scalp. With a special scanner your scalp is enlarged 300 times to reveal the condition of both your hair and scalp. Below are some pictures taken before and after the treatment, with the ‘before’ pictures on the left. Not such a pretty sight, but I was told that it all looks completely normal!

Once the state of your hair and scalp is determined, your treatment plan is decided upon.

The feedback from Louella, my trichologist, was that my scalp is in a good condition and that the hair density is good for my age (phew). The only problem for my hair right now, though not a serious one, is that the ends of my hair are a little dry, probably due to chemical hair colorings.

I ended up receiving the Detox Scalp Therapy which involves the following steps:

1. Brushing of hair

This stimulates the scalp and opens the pores.

2. Detox mask

A mask is applied, using algae extract and lavender oil, unhealthy follicles are detoxified and hair cells are nourished.

3. Oxygen therapy

This step infuses the scalp with oxygen, opening the pores further to receive treatment. A cap is fitted on your head in which the oxygen is filtered.

4. Scalp massage

Needs no explaining and is used for more scalp stimulation.

5: Shampoo using customised treatment blend

Using fruit and olive leaf extracts, this shampoo purifies and rebalances the scalp.

6: Application of customised scalp serum

An appropriate serum is applied to complete the purifying and rebalancing process.

7.  Shoulder massage (for spa option only)

For relaxation and extra pampering. Who doesn’t love a shoulder massage!

8. Blow dry

Finally your hair is professionally blow dried.

What was the result?

The whole process took about 2.5 hours and you will walk out of the salon relaxed and with hair in tip top condition and blow dried to perfection. It’s hard for me to judge what the long-term benefits of regular hair treatments would be, since I only received one. But it’s definitely worth it for the relaxation and hair pampering alone. The professional blow dry is a great finishing touch. So you may be able to justify the treatment as a more luxurious blow dry for yourself, whenever you have a special occasion to attend.

This particular salon was relaxed and professional, although I would have wished for different headphones (given to you to listen to music or watch videos during your treatment) as the ones provided would not stay in my ears.

For more information on treatments, prices and locations in Singapore, you can visit the Phyto Hair Spa website.

I would love to hear from you, if you have ever done a series of hair treatments. What were the results?
If you haven’t done any, would you consider one?

Oh I would so do this! I love going to the salon every 4 weeks for a trim, highlights, and a blowout, but this would be even more relaxing. The closest I have come to a hair “treatment” is a deep conditioning. I will have to do some investigative work to see if any services like this are offered in my area. It sounds heavenly!

I haven’t set foot in a hair salon in three years. I cut, color, and condition my own hair. I save so much doing it myself and I always cut it the way I like it. Never have to make an appt.!

Wow Marla. Very impressive. It certainly saves a lot of money. Hair is definitely the highest cost in my beauty budget…

Sounds like a great way to relax! I may have to check to see if we have a hair spa close by. It might help with my thinning hair! ;)

I think that sounds like a bit of heaven on earth. Thanks for the review, I’ve been wondering if the hair treatment was worth the money and it sounds like it is. That just might make for a good valentine present (to myself).

Sounds like a great idea!

I have never seen one although I expect there are some in London. It sounds wonderful. I am sitting here with a towel around my head, having just washed my hair, thinking my long, thick hair could do with some serious TLC! Let us know if your hair feels different when you have washed it a few time.

I have already washed it a few times and have seen no noticeable differences. I really think it would take more than just one treatment to see significant improvement in your hair.

Oh, that’s a shame. I went to the hairdressers before we went to Sri Lanka in December, just for highlights, trim and blow dry (no treatments) and I was amazed that my hair was so well behaved while we were away. Usually when we are in a humid country it starts to go frizzy! How do you manage that?

I struggle with it every day Lorraine…

Tip: to keep bud style ear pieces in place, try bringing them up over the back of your ear and looping in at the front.

Thanks for the advice Maggie. These were not like the little apple head phones. More like 2 ear stoppers. No matter what I tried, they would not stay in. Certainly not when someone was working on my head causing slight movements…

I haven’t heard of this beauty treatment before and I don’t know where I’d find one, but I guess as lorraine says, they must have them in London.
It sounds fabulous and very relaxing. I’m sure it was good for your hair as well. I am interested to hear how long the effects on your hair will last.
I wonder if it’s worth trying deep conditioning treatments at home and if they make a difference to the hair’s condition.

I think it all helps Aileen. I have a hair mask at home and really should use it more often, but it takes time and I’m still lazy about these things….

My hair is thin and I have not got much of it. Nevertheless, by visiting my excellent hair dresser every six weeks and only dying the roots every three weeks, I keep my hair in excellent condition.
Once they have treated my hair with a sort of deep conditioning which I will never do again. It was so sleek for 3 weeks and I want it rough so it will stay up a bit, giving me volume.

Interesting Greetje. Clearly they did not use the correct treatment for your hair.
