Introducing Kelly, our new expert writer on makeup and grooming! | 40plusstyle.com

I am very excited to introduce you to Kelly Bilimoria today. She is a professional makeup artist who works for TV, the film industry and at fashion shows. She is going to write some expert articles on 40+ Style on how you can look better with the right makeup and grooming. She will be able to answer any makeup or grooming questions you may have as well. More on that later. First, let’s get to know her a bit better!

Hi Kelly.  Thanks for taking the time out to answer a few questions for 40PlusStyle.com. Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself?

I was born in Sydney, Australia and have lived and worked in Sydney, London, Moscow, Dubai, Penang (Malaysia) and Singapore.

As a point of reference which age group do you belong to or perhaps you are willing to share your age?

30-35

Can you tell us a bit more about your job as a make-up artist? What attracted you to the profession?

My job as a makeup artist is quite dynamic. I have worked in a variety of media from TV/Film to fashion shows, photoshoots and even the more specific areas of body painting, airbrush and special effects. My love for makeup came from my childhood dream of being a Ballerina. I started at the age of 4 and continued well into my late teens. It was from performing that I developed this hidden love and talent for stage makeup. This ignited my desire to learn and study more in the art of makeup.

What are the most important skills to have as a makeup artist?

The most important skills for a makeup artist to have are an understanding and technical knowledge of how to make women look and feel beautiful. This is from the most basic “non wearer of makeup” to the avid lover of makeup. A makeup artist must know how to accentuate a woman’s features without distracting or overly changing her appearance. In addition to this, a sound knowledge of products and skin types is essential in order to give a client a real professional opinion on what works best for her.

What is your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is making a woman look and feel good! Additionally, I love to see how makeup can transform a woman, by giving her confidence and accentuating her features.

How important do you feel makeup is to the overall look of a 40+ woman?

Makeup does wonders in concealing all those imperfections we get as we age. In today’s society, we have more and more cosmetics and beauty products within our reach and I think every woman should embrace her age and make sure she looks and feels good. Overall, a classic look for a mature woman is essential – a perfect base, luscious pout and enhanced eyes. However, I do feel that as we age we are tempted to avoid a ray of colours. At 40+, you are still youthful, so embrace colours but just in a more subtle or subdued way.

What is your best advice for the woman who likes to look polished but wants to wear as little makeup as possible?

My top three things would be:

  1. Conceal around the eye area
  2. Wear a good mascara to open your eyes
  3. Wear a little colour on your cheeks and lips.

What kind of makeup do you recommend for the evening for a 40+ woman?

A soft smokey eye looks fabulous on a 40+ woman. Instead of using the young and bold jet black, switch it up. Use a softer grey, or earthy brown and if you’re more adventurous try a navy blue or wine purple.

What is your personal style when it comes to makeup?

I absolutely love the classic Marilyn Monroe look, but on a day to day basis I prefer a flawless base, neat eyeliner and a touch of colour on my cheeks and lips. I tend to change up the colours and tones I use for my lips and cheeks depending on the season, fashion or the mood I am in.

Do you feel that a woman’s makeup (routine) should change after 40. If yes how?

Definitely! I think a woman should spend more time developing her style as she matures. She should examine everything from her basic skincare routine to her moisturiser and her makeup regime. These days there are so many products available that are more tailored to your needs. A little time spent understanding what it is you need and want as you age will make you understand the products you need and how to achieve the looks that will make you feel instantly 10 years younger. You would be surprised how different you can feel when you try a new product or technique.

Do you have any further makeup tips for women over 40?

“You only live once, so be a little vain!” – You are never too old and your age has nothing to do with how you look. It’s always how you feel. Embrace what you have and accentuate it and it will surely make you feel and look younger.

What are your plans for your business and how do you see it develop over the coming years?

My business plans are to develop more workshop classes for women, especially classes on how women can embrace and enhance their look. It addition to this, I would like to share more of my knowledge about makeup and techniques by writing more articles for magazines and websites, and a book dedicated to the everyday woman and her beauty needs.

Thanks Kelly for your insightful replies!

I would love to see an article about starting out with makeup in your 40’s. I have never worn much makeup, but I’m realizing as I get older that I need to start. I have no idea where to begin or what products are essential.

Great idea for posts, I’m looking forward to reading and learning more. I’m searching for an under eye concealer which would cover blue veins close to the service of the skin. I need some help finding a good product. I’ve read Mac has a concealer pallet that might work?

Hello! I am 50 and haven’t worn foundation in at least 15 years, b/c I always think it highlights my lines! My skin is a bit drier now that I am older, but I still tend to have the oily forehead and sides near my temples. Should I even care? Is there one good for people like me?

Lorraine

As you know, I have already asked for eyebrow tips, so I am excited to learn more about that and everything else Kelly can share.
