I still don't feel that I'm doing enough to keep my skin in good condition. So I would love to hear from you. What is your favorite skin routine? Do you use retinol products? Expensive creams or just from the drugstore?

My skin care routine is as follows:

A mild cleanser in the morning, followed by a toner for my skincare, before I apply my moisturizer and eye cream and then my makeup, as I like to wear a light makeup for work. Sometimes, if I look tired of puffy, I'll apply a tightening lotion, before applying foundation, I like Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. In the evening I cleanse and tone again, apply a serum specific for my needs before applying eye cream and night cream.

I exfoliate once or twice weekly, and try to use a facial mask regularly, depending on my skin's needs. I have normal/oily combination skin, and I mostly prefer dermatologist's brands like Decleor, md formulations and Exuviance. However they are quite expensive, so I'm trying out some cheaper alternatives for the moment. Kiehl's have some nice serums, and my current daily moisturizer is from Greek brand Korres. However, if could use a combo of my favourite skin care products it would be these:

Cleanser, toner, moisturizing mask and daily moisturizer from Decleor.
Vitamin mask and exfoliant from md formulations
Eye cream from Matis
Serum and night cream from Exuviance

I've also recently been reading about the Oil Cleansing Method which is supposed to be particularly good for combination skin, so I've decided to try it to see how it works.

How interesting to read Nanne! I always find others are so disciplined when it comes to their skincare regime. I've tried several creams and just can't seem to find something that's perfect. I just see my skin getting older (rapidly!) . I used to exfoliate but recently got advised not to do that, due to my thin skin... I did not actually know those brands (Decleor and Exuviance) but have been wanting to go to a dermatologist for some expert advice on my skin. I remember Matis from a long time ago and used to love it. Had forgotten about it as it's not that easily available. Perhaps I should go look for it again...

I think you would like Decleor. It's based on cosmetic aromatherapy and contains essential oils and they have many products that are good for very dry skin. And their creams smell lovely, too! You can buy Decleor online at Feelunique.com, they ship worldwide for free.

Don't forget that genes are dominant in this field. Makes a world of difference whether you have good or bad genes. No matter what skin care you use.
I have always used Clinique and I always take off every bit of make up before I go to sleep. And apply night cream, but it is no use with my bad genes.

Yes, I get that feeling as well. Not very lucky in the gene game either when it comes to getting wrinkles (very) quickly....

I have a lot to say on this one, it is my field of expertise. No I'm not a professional but I run a blog on the issue and 40 some years on stage makes you an expert in the end! ;-)

The human organism consist mainly of water, as you might now. When we get older out bodies also dries out and mistakenly people advocate more oils, lipids, fats to restore youthful glow, but what we really need is moisture. Frequently the advice runs the opposite of what should be done and therefore they also say drink more water.

It really works the other way around. Roughly i would say lipids should come from inside with Omega3 and moisture from outside with natural humectants. (It is a little more complicated than that... ) Humectant are substances that enhance the skins capacity to keep moisture within itself. Very, but VERY few brands live up to what an aging complexion needs!

Stella you say "Humectant are substances that enhance the skins capacity to keep moisture within itself". Are they things that stimulate cells to multiply? Because I am a bit scared of that.

I agree with good genes, although a plastic surgeon friend also says I have protected my face from sun so much of my life with hats that it helped tremendously! I started using Oil of Olay products at age 21 and have used Avon eye and anti aging day cream since my thirties. I also just started using Pure Argan oil instead of a night cream and love it, especially around my eyes... I started with good genes! My mother in law is aging beautifully so that means my daughter has it on both sides!

Greetje, don't worry, humectants dont affect cells that way att all. You have them in your cells already and they absorb humidity from both the air and your skin. When we get older, or in wintertime for most people, we need some help therefore using products with humectants in them. That way the cell gets support in that particular activity. I have a spray for instance that I can use both on face and hair. It's miraculous while flying and exceptional for those with contact lenses! (Not to spray in your eyes!! ;-))
