Many of us have gone through phases where we just couldn't get our style groove on. Did that ever happen to you? How did you get out of it?

It would be great to hear your style stories, which I'm sure would be helpful to many women!

I think I'm in one right now! I wrote a post on my blog recently about that, and got lots of good advice, so I've started to experment more with my clothes. I'll try to inject some more colour and be a little more adventurous when planning my spring wardrobe, focusing more on the styles and colors that I really like instead of trying to be all practical. Of course my wardrobe need some workhorses (the "boring" classics), but they won't do without adding a few fun pieces, I think.

Good plan. Absolutely, you need pieces that make it fun! It's often a good idea to combine something classic with something modern to balance the look...

My problem is that I always buy clothes that stand out, that attract (my) attention. So I end up with a wardrobe of very nice pieces which cannot be combined because they all are screaming "look at me". I cannot do it: find quality but more plain stuff which is easy to combine. Twice I hired a stylist to go shopping with me: heaven! Unfortunately too expensive to keep this up.

I think the key is to buy a few good pants and skirts in a neutral color. I really like (winter) white, but black and a light brown or jeans are good too. I find that I can wear my wide legged white pants with almost anything! Black and white pieces are also easy to mix and match and you can easily add an extra accent color.

I think I might have the opposite of a style rut - I have too many different styles! I like lots of colors and different types of clothes and "looks". Last summer I did Boho, and Tribal, and I need very Classic for one country club and Athletic for a more family oriented one, and I became a "college mom" and LOVE that but that required a whole wardrobe unto itself with a certain set of colors. I also have to have Formal outfits for fundraisers. I have always been a shoe "nut" and I like bags and I recently discovered hats. I know many stylists suggest finding your personal statement (in 2 or 3 words) and using that as a guide to hone your wardrobe but I guess I am not ready for that yet. I try to always be appropriate for the situation and for the weather but I can be a 70's flower child one day and a lady who lunches the next and a crazed football fan the next! LOL! It is just too fun to grow up and be limited.

I have so much fun with fashion! It makes me very happy! I finally got to see Ralph Lauren's collection for F/W. I am in love with it. The tweeds and plaids and prints and the way he mixes them all in an outfit. The leopard coats and the velvet. And the black and gold evening gowns are gorgeous. If I am lucky enough to get one of his 1920's stlye beaded cocktail dresses I shall cherish it forever!

Oh Suzanne, how I envy you. You are out of my league. Hope the dress will never lose a bead.

I agree with Greetje! I have a rather limited clothes budget, so for now, no designer duds for me:) But some day - who knows?

I was in a style rut for over 10 years. I finally got out of it after my divorce and my daughter said "you'll never attract another man dressing like that". So I bought some 'style' books and started imitating the suggested styles. Over time I figured out what (and what didn't) looked good on me. Now, I use what I learned, style blogs, and my instincts to determine what I wear and how. Style CAN be learned and it is a really fun journey.

How great to hear from you and get your feedback and so nice to read that learning about style did make a difference for you. I too think that style and dressing can be learned and I hope to contribute to that!
