There are a few things to be more aware of when you are dressing over 40 or 50. Did you do any things differently? What are main modifications you made? Love to get your feedback on this!

Oh yes, it did change a lot. Had to cover up more and more. Sleeves got longer, preferably over the elbow. Hemline just above the knee. Shirts are nearly under my chin (sob!). I do love some clevage, but my skin there is so wrinkled. If I want to look my age or a bit younger I have to hide that. My skin ages more than me, so covering up is the only possibility.
And of course: shapewear.

Yes, that's why designers should create more nice dresses with sleeves! Isn't that just so annoying when your skin ages so much faster than you!

I grew up in Wisconsin and didn't move south until I was in my 30s, so I am accustomed to being very covered up just because it's cool-ish or flat out cold most of the time up there. I dislike high hemlines and spaghetti strap dresses and such, like the 20 something club girls wear. I've always been pretty crunchy-granola and never liked to wear super high heels or anything, so I have not really changed my style very much.

I think I might have to put some thought into this question. My style is always changing but how much is due to age? I live in a neighborhood where it is important to keep up with trends - not like NYC - but more than people would think for my living in the Mid-West. Some of my friends are devoted to certain designers and they have the newest items from their collections each season. One friend has a family member who works for a designer so she is actually a season ahead - which is not that great as she is wearing sandals and summer prints in November when the rest of us are in OTK boots and long coats. I guess my crowd is more influenced by trends and maybe size before age. I will get back to you on this.

I'm in a process of deliberatly changing my way of dressing, because I want a more cohesive wardrobe. Before I turned 40 I never cared much to edit my wardrobe, I'd buy the items I liked (which was a lot of cheap and more or less trendy items, mostly H&M) and had a lot of clothes, but more and more often found myself having nothing to wear. I have what you might call a relaxed style and mostly wear jeans, but I love to dress up for special occasions, and I want my overall style to be a little more polished and timeless and of better quality. I won't wear very short skirts or shorts or anything too tight, but I feel comfortable showing a little cleavage or wearing sleeveless.

I would love to get Karl Lagerfeld to design an 40+ collection every season. Other, more affordable, brands will copy and we would profit. Now we have to go through too much clutter: stuff which is only good for very young, very slim girls.
I WANT MY OWN FASHION COLLECTION. Karl are you reading this?

I don't think I have him as a reader yet :( Perhaps start a different topic directed to Karl. Perhaps his marketing team get daily alerts on his name..... Will soon write an article on this as well, but will start with shoes!

I registered just to respond to this thread! Truth be told, it's been a struggle. I've never been all that great with fashion, and it's just gotten harder as I've aged. I know I don't want to look as though I'm trying to be a 21 year old going out clubbing; I'm 44, and I'm perfectly fine looking like a 44-year-old woman. But I still want to express elegance and creativity. I still want to be "on trend." What's worked somewhat for me is finding pieces that are of high quality. I think when you are young, you can get away with throw-away fashion that's going to fall apart after wearing it twice. But on an older woman, cheap (poor quality) clothing just looks tragic.

Welcome to 40+ Style Reeda! Lovely to hear from you. I think your advice is sound. I too am very particular about fabric quality. However, every now and then I buy a trendier item cheaper as I know it will not last that long, but even for that I usually stick to a natural fabric like cotton. I hope that 40+Style can inspire you to be creative, elegant and trendy with your fashion!

You are very right: good quality makes all the difference. I am a bit more advanced in age (..LOL....) and have gone through several stages. In other words, more and more things I could not wear anymore as years advanced. It also depends a lot on your genes. Some women have a beautiful skin with very little wrinkles till they are very old. Others don't. But in spite of all the restrictions I have inflicted on myself, I can still find something that is really good. Perhaps just so because I stick to my restrictions. Like yesterday. There were all these beautiful things in the shop that I wanted but were "against the list": the garment either showed my arms (which are thready) or the neckline was very unflattering, or the hem too short or.... you get the point?
But it didn't get me down, I kept looking. And there it was: a nice shirt in a good colour which was not clingy and had sleeves. Then I found trousers that were not clingy and suited my figure. To makes things perfect they also had really out of the ordinairy shoes to fit the outfit. And I think that you can still wear a lot of shoes. There are less aging problems with shoes. Am I correct?
In a nutshell: yes, it gets harder to find suitable things, but it is really still fun looking for it.

Do you know the Designer Isaac Mizrahi? He says all women should invest in their hair cut and in their shoes and just have fun with the rest of the outfit. I think there is some true wisdom in this. Good hair gives a woman polish and good shoes - well don't most of us have that shoe gene? I can always remember a great pair of shoes in detail long after I have forgotten the outfit.

Interesting Suzanne. I'm quite opposite from you. I remember the outfit. Hair has always been my main 'issue' and shoes have never interested me as much as clothes have. Am slowly changing though as I pay more attention to hair and shoes as well....
